SALT LAKE CITY - Authorities blocked off and thoroughly secured a home in the Salt Lake Valley on Saturday because of its connection to a batch of potentially deadly ricin found at a Las Vegas hotel this week.
Roger Von Bergendorff, 57, was hospitalized on Feb. 14 due to a sudden respiratory illness and was later determined to have likely been exposed to the ricin -- a rare and deadly toxin extracted from the castor bean.
Only Thursday was it discovered that ricin was present inside Von Bergendorff's room when the man's cousin, Thomas Tholen, went there to retrieve some of his belongings. Tholen had reportedly stayed in the room with Von Bergendorff for a while.
However, it was not officially known whether the ricin -- nor the castor beans found in the room -- actually belonged to Von Bergendorff. snip
Adding to the mystery, police said late Friday that firearms, an "anarchist-type textbook'' and castor beans were found in the room where the ricin was discovered.
