Anania, a native of Marianna, Pa., was the first in his family to be born in the United States, Elizabeth Edwards said. He was raised in Brownsville, Pa., and attended the University of Pittsburgh. He later attended the U.S. Naval Academy, where he played football and was selected as an All-American in lacrosse . . .

After graduating one year early in 1944, Anania served on the USS Quincy, which took President Franklin D. Roosevelt to meet British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Soviet leader Josef Stalin at the Yalta Conference.

Anania also served in Korea, where he was awarded the Bronze Star, and in Vietnam. In 1958, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for piloting an aircraft that carried 13 others to safety after it had been attacked by two MiG jet fighters during a surveillance mission off North Korea.

He retired from the military after serving NATO in Italy and moved to Chapel Hill, where he suffered a stroke in 1990.

Anania served as commanding officer of the NROTC at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and was also an assistant lacrosse coach. A lacrosse scholarship is named in his honor.

3. I read her book and it had a moving chapter section on his wartime bravery.
I am so sorry for her and the Edwards family. They have been through so much. Her book made me cry, it was so real and so wonderful.

9. That's a big one for anyone. Mine died 3 years ago and I still MISS him.
We shared our politics, a minority perspective in our family, but that made us even closer.

Death is never "okay", so it's hard to say some nostrum about peace, or the hereafter, or Jesus, or whatever, for Elizabeth's family and the Edwards family. I'll just say I hope they know that many People share their feelings and hope his legacy to them is strong and enduring.

At UNC in the late 50's, I had several friends who were in Navy ROTC under him. I met him a few times through them.

All of his family and friends are in my thoughts and prayers.
