breaking: U.N. sanctions Iran anew over nuclear program

UNITED NATIONS - The U.N. Security Council approved a third round of sanctions against Iran on Monday with near unanimous support, sending a strong signal to Tehran that its refusal to suspend uranium enrichment is unacceptable and becoming increasingly costly.

For the first time, the resolution bans trade with Iran in goods that have both civilian and military uses.

The vote was 14-0 with one abstention from Indonesia.

Iran's U.N. ambassador, Mohammad Khazee, told the council just before the vote that the government would not comply with the "unlawful action" against its "peaceful nuclear program."

3. didn't the US report on Iran say they haven't been doing anything for 5 yrs? n/t
this is one last chance for Bush, et al, to create a lie to invade. if the UN lets them get away with this... well, hasn't the world almost gone to hell anyway under their administration?

NIE Report: Iran Halted Nuclear Weapons Program Years Ago

In a stunning reversal of Bush administration conventional wisdom, a new assessment by U.S. intelligence agencies concludes Iran shelved its nuclear weapons program over four years ago.

"We judge with high confidence that in fall 2003, Tehran halted its nuclear weapons program," reads a declassified version of the National Intelligence Estimate key findings.

"We judge with moderate confidence that the earliest possible date Iran would be technically capable of producing enough highly enriched uranium (HEU) for a weapon is late 2009."

7. Intelligence Report Not What It Seems
"We judge with moderate confidence that the earliest possible date Iran would be technically capable of producing enough highly enriched uranium (HEU) for a weapon is late 2009."

Translation:

Dear Israel, Congress isn't going to give me another blank check for war. Sorry. This would be a great time for YOU to take things into your own capable hands. We'll understand.

All Best,

George & Co.

9. that crossed my mind too. so why did they hit Gaza?
that would not seem to make any action by them acceptable to the wider world. and Europeans will strike. they will shut down their cities to protest another Bush war. Bush is despised by anyone I know who is there who follows politics at all because of his lies re: Iraq (and other things.)

but of course, people in this country could not be bothered to take action that would have consequences (rather than yet another march) because that would be an inconvenience. Or we couldn't do that because we'd be siding with the bad guys... no real room for nuance among too many here. just because you think invading Iran is a shitty idea, that doesn't mean you support them. I wish pinheads could figure that one out. It would make our foreign policy a lot better.

5. The UN is being a tool in this case
If they hand Iran to us, they shouldn't be surprised when we start invading some of them, next.

6. Okay: What gets my attention is the 14-0
vote.

I would have thought that Russia and China would have not cooperated or used the veto.

The fact that they are on board makes me wonder WTF.

I guess we shall see what transpires, still this to me is not a hopeful development.

Combined with the shenanigans on the Columbian/Ecuador/Venezuela border and the Israel/Palestine dust up, color me concerned (not that I can do anything about it).

Not Good!:wtf:

11. Well great, just open up that door to WWIII. Cheney is on the way out
and drools all over the prospects of stealing Iranian resources and enslaving the people, er, giving them jobs like being gofers for mega-corporations.
