Executive jet crashes outside Wiley Post Airport.. irony, anyone?
Naming an airport after someone who died in a plane crash, seems a bit...odd :eyes:

26. Lost, on a painted sky ...
Lost
On a painted sky
Where the clouds are hung
For the poet's eye
You may find him
If you may find him
There
On a distant shore
By the wings of dreams
Through an open door
You may know him
If you may

30. Here's your reference ....
FEAR no more the heat o' the sun,
Nor the furious winter's rages;
Thou thy worldly task hast done,
Home art gone, and ta'en thy wages:
Golden lads and girls all must,
As chimney-sweepers, come to dust.

Have you figured out my reference? It's not quite as lofty, but worth a laugh, if you have a wicked sense of humor.

31. Jonathan Livingston Seagull - Neil Diamond
Edited on Tue Mar-04-08 06:55 PM by melody
Hey, modern poets are still poets.

And yup, the seagull part made me giggle. lol

I am told by my sister that the lyric comes directly from the book (which I confess to have never read) --
here I had credited Neil Diamond. lol

22. Actually, at the time, Wiley Post (and other aviators) was (were) as famous...
It was a time when aviators were superstars....Lindbergh crossed the Atlantic in '27 and Earhart disappeared in '37....Post held several aviation records and his crash with Will Rogers in 1935 equalled in impact the "day the music died".

8. Looks like there's also a Will Rogers World Airport in OK.
Seem to recall they died in the same air crash, if my memory serves. I could google to know for sure, but yes, it is ironic indeed.

Any word about those on board? I know someone who flies executive aircraft around the country, and always get a bit concerned when I hear these things.

Light plane down near Wiley Post Airport in Oklahoma City
March 04, 2008 17:03 EST

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- A small jet airplane crashed in a wooded area this afternoon near Wiley Post Airport in northwest Oklahoma City.

A Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said preliminary indications were that one person was killed.

The Cessna 500 crashed about 3:15 p.m. News video from the scene showed a small fire and the charred wreckage.

FAA spokesman Roland Herwig said the twin-engine aircraft was traveling from Wiley Post airport to Mankato, Minnesota, when it crashed about five miles southwest of the airport.

The aircraft was registered to Southwest Orthopedic Sports Medicine Clinic in Oklahoma City.

Greg Horton, an eyewitness who was fishing in Lake Overholser, told Oklahoma City television station KWTV that he saw the airplane crash and saw a fireball.

He said he saw a flock of birds in the area about the time of the crash and thought this may have contributed to the accident.

The Cessna 500 business jet can hold two pilots and at least five passengers.

37. Birds would do it.
Birds brought down a Lear 25 at PDK near Atlanta a few years back. I recently posted here about my fear of the geese on the Potomac near Washington National Airport (where I was based for 15 years). It is just a matter on time there.

45. I've thought that myself
The proximity of Lake Overholser to Wiley Post and the number of birds I've seen there, especially large waterfowl like geese and ducks makes it amazing to me that there aren't more accidents. :scared:

40. The plane wasn't tiny--it was a 9-seater, I think,
so not as small as some. Our guy had spent thousands of hours flying that thing, and he was certified to fly bigger jets as well. It's just awful.

44. Much drama on the local OKC news, apparantly one of the passengers...
was some kind of Mr. Big in OKC, no name yet, but the evening news bimbo was all dramatic about how SHE knew the man, "...but we can't tell you his name, and this is hard, because I knew him. Did I mention that I knew this important man, this prominent mogul????"
