Yes you can be size 16 and sexy ..says Miss England hopeful Chloe Marshall
A 17-year-old, size-16 trainee beautician from Guildford, Surrey, who proves you can be beautiful without being slimmed down by an artist's airbrush.

We asked the 5ft 10in teenager, who is 12st 8lbs, to model high-street outfits and tell us why being bigger than the average celeb is sexy.

13. Don't forget just why that image is pushed by the fashion industry
Skinny models make better coathangers foremost and I'm sorry if it's seen as gaybashing but those skinny women with no curves look like young thin men and the fashion industry has no shortage of shallow folks in it that think that thin young men are sexy (male and female.)

36. A positive outlook and "screw you" attitude can go a long
way for a big girl. I have friends whose daughter was miserable in high school because of her size and inability to fit in. They found an alternative high school affiliated with the local community college and she came into her own. Nevertheless, it's hard for the kid who doesn't fit the cookie cutter mold in this area. My own daughter despises the "ugg boot wearing, size zero preps" that dominate her school.

one serious physical flaw will do you in in those meat market competitions (Im a little unsettled on pageants but I am not strongly enough opposed to condemn them). Were anyone to meet this girl on the street they would be taken aback by her beauty but forcing her to take those ankles out and be graded on them will prevent her from wining... Am I not able to express what *I* think is sexy? Seriously do you think a guy with a beer gut can win 'mr universe'? I find it amusing that I point out something that most people would agree with, her ankles are not her strongest feature, without judging her as a person and you go and get in a nit about it..

Is she more sexy that those stick figures that cause the uproar in Spain? 100% yes...

Can I not prefer Black hair over blond, long hair over short? This is a beauty contest, not a person contest... She is, as a whole, a rather lovely looking woman *way* above the median. My wife thinks I'm fine, but I have a touch of the pear profile so I have no illusions that Im not taking home any beauty contest this lifetime..

84. Yep.
Amazing how a woman is there to prove a point about beauty not having to conform to a mold, and the end result is a thread reducing her to individual body parts, criticizing her because those parts don't fit their mold, posting other photos of women so we can collectively denounce their body types, and then speculating about whether we would "hit it" (is violence + depersonalized pronouns the new romance?), and commenting on which public figures would stain her dress. I'm having a hard time even verbalizing how fucked up that last part is ... she's high school aged. Did we really need to go there?

Maybe "amazing" isn't quite the right word - more like predictable.

88. Oh come off of it..
Yes humans have a standard for beauty and yes we all have our own individual preferences but *by in large* there is an idea that certain features are physically attractive and others are not..

I find it damn amusing that a full figure woman would be getting mad props on a thread (attractive though she might be) when at the same time women who are far too skinny are being maligned... Hypocrites..

Publicly criticizing her?

Lets see what else I have said regarding her..

- She is a very pretty woman, dare I say sexy
- Were anyone to meet this girl on the street they would be taken aback by her beauty
- Still I hope she does well
- Is she more sexy that those stick figures that cause the uproar in Spain? 100% yes...
- She is, as a whole, a rather lovely looking woman *way* above the median.
- she is a very pretty young woman

Still it must feel real nice to get your panties in a bunch and jump up on that high horse of yours..

denounce their body types?

- she is a very pretty young woman but we all have our flaws
- Were anyone to meet this girl on the street they would be taken aback by her beauty

hit it?

Where the hell did I ever imply that? I talked about her appearance in only the most respectful terms..

Why your outrage is targeted at me I have no clue.... Or are you saying you dont find *any* set of physical features more appealing to the eye than others (eye color / hair color / facial hair / build / height / ....

43. Last I knew though there were no spot-reducing exercises to trim down ankles!
I think she looks way better than the skeletal models. However I can say from experience that it's really hard to get rid of 'cankles' without losing weight all over. Also, it seems cankles can have more to do with foot shape than weight - I had cankles at 130 lbs, which I think was probably because my feet are also wide and flat (flintstone feet, woo sexy!)

62. I totally understand your point
I was just contrasting the first photo with the other photos of models posted in this thread. The picture you posted is a nice, not-anorexic body size and is much more in line with the look that usually wins beauty contests. (I'm personally partial to dark hair, but I'm not one of the contest judges!)

The woman in the OP pic is not likely to win the beauty contest, but I applaud her for believing she has a right to be there and for trying to put an alternative beauty standard out there.

Personal preference is an individual choice and, IMHO, should be honored as such.

Only when it impacts health would I have a problem with anyone else's definition of beauty.

44. Good for her!
Of course there are many different opinions on what is attractive and I don't expect all men to prefer the curvier women like this, but damn is it nice to see an alternative to the stick figures in the popular media. If you were a guy who preferred curvy chicks you wouldn't find much in the media to represent what you want to see! One curvy chick is still by far the minority compared to the other images out there, but at least its good to see more options for once.

BTW, size 16 in the UK is about a 12-14 in the US...pretty close to the average size. That's not even plus sizes.

considered a plus size and is the plus size department. The racks are mostly full of size 0-6 and even clothes labeled S, M, and L are way undersized so they would fit the average 10 year old. Same thing at Nordstrom, and those are the only two big department stores left in the area. Pennys has more size 10 - 16 selection, but it's mostly polyester old lady clothes. Clothes shopping is a nightmare around here.

50. My girl
I love the fact that my little sis is actually prompting people over here into debate about size! I moved out here at the beginning of the year, and whilst I think many of the girls I see in my gym etc are stunning, Clo just looks radiant in ever photo and is promoting something a little different. If your beautiful you will be beautiful whatever... ditto if your ugly! However skinny you are. 63. Must be because you're in So Cal
Here in the midwest most of the stores here have standard misses sizes from 2-14 and then there's the plus size dept that goes up from there. Plus size does also start at 14 but it's a much fuller cut than misses' 14, as I discovered a few years ago when I was heavier and did wear a 14. I thought a 14W would fit me but it was way too big.

Totally agree about Penney's having old lady clothes though, its the same around here. Penney's is on my list for stores I expect to disappear within a decade or two.

78. Here in So. Cal 99% of what is on the rack is
below size 12. I think the average is around 6. Then you go out into the mall and look at the women and can see that most of them are closer to a 14. It makes no sense.

It's even worse hell for a teen. There's nothing in the junior department above a 9. So kids with meat on their bones are out of luck. My daughter isn't "fat" by any measure, but she is big-boned and mostly wears band shirts from Hot Topic because that's about all she likes that actually fit.

96. Lane Bryant...
That's where my wife gets her clothes. She's a size 16. It's a little more expensive but the clothes are specifically made for bigger size women. They look so much nicer and sit so much better on her. Any of the plus size stuff she got from a department store just has that "mu-mu" look to it.

Edited on Wed Mar-05-08 02:10 PM by lumberjack_jeff
My flame suit is on, but carrying too much weight (such as I do at 5-11 and 210#) isn't healthy.

Then again, if I'd started adulthood overweight, I'd probably be worse off now.

73. Just to add info to the debate here's her BMI:
Pplease check if I'm wrong, I'm pretty tired at the moment and I have a cold :)

According to my math she weighs 176 lbs and she'd 5'10 so her BMI should be 25.3 which places her in the 'overweight' portion of the scale. Here's the link I used to calculate it: http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/

She's not far off from a 'normal' weight though. The cut-off is 24.9.

74. Your math is right.
If you drop her weight to 173, she is at 24.8. Hence, 3 pounds overweight.

79. Thanks for that
In my experience, being overweight as a young adult is bad because the problem becomes worse as people age and become more sedentary.

But who knows, maybe she won't grow up to sit in front of a keyboard like me. :banghead:

cause it ain't pretty, but she is not in the position that many in society would label her as being. She isn't skinny, but she just barely falls into the overweight BMI.

I'm an inch shorter, and slightly heavier. I will never, ever be a small size; my frame is too large.

Some of the extra weight is probably in muscle, especially in my arms and upper back; being a woodworker does that. (stand away from the power tools, those are mine)

Huzzah for her!

I'm not sure how the dress sizes work. She's considered overweight according to NIH. For some that may be a turn-on, for others it is not a turn-on.

83. She is Five Ten for god's sake

The average woman in this country is a size 14.

Yet, all we see are women who are really tall & really skinny - something like 2% of the population.

It is ridiculous, it is dangerous. Sure, eat moderately, exercise. Then, love yourself because genetically it ain't there for most of the population.

She does not look fat. She is just bigger then what we are CONSTANTLY shown.

Her body mass index is 25, barely over the ideal weight.

She's perfectly healthy, and damn sexy IMO.

Now, if she was 5'2" tall and weighed 178 lbs, she'd have a BMI of over 30 and be classified as obese.
