already there is not enough food in the world because of climate change

Rice now too costly to give away

Soaring global rice prices are hitting the stomachs of Asia's poorest citizens. The people of East Timor, where nearly 40% live on less than 0.55 US cents a day, have just been told they may not receive their annual quota of food aid.

"We have been forced to provide less food to East Timor; provide less rice than we intended to," Paul Risely, Asia spokesperson for the United Nations food agency, told Inter Press Service (IPS). "We have requested the people of East Timor to look for local substitutes."

"Any chance to reduce high malnutrition rate is severely curtailed," added Risley of a country that suffers from chronic malnutrition, where some 46% of the children are stunted and 42% of children below five years are underweight. Currently, the WFP has pledged to feed one in five people in East Timor which has a population of 1.1 million people.

-snip-

A weakening US dollar has also been singled out as a reason, in addition to demand from the increasingly affluent China for more food to feed its population. In 2007, China marked a shift away from being a net exporter of rice and wheat, raising the export taxes on the grains to keep local produce at home. In the meantime, import tariffs were removed for easier access to the two staples from the world market.

note: the important words here are "local substitutes". if you don't have the money to pay to have oil bring food to you then you starve or find "local substitutes".

you can see by the above that the first on the earth to die will be the already seriously poor.

Two persons died in a devastating storm that blew through the district last night. The storm also played havoc with the mango crop. While a woman Archana Mahaladar (36) died buried in the debris of her house that was destroyed by the storm at Harishchandrapur-II village, a watchman Dhamai Das Mandal, who was sleeping in a boat at Gazole drowned after the boat capsised in the storm. The storm along with hail also damaged the mango crop in the northern part of. According to mango farmers, the mango flowers in full bloom have been stunted, which would affect production of the fruit. Mango cultivation has also been affected at Ratua, Manikchak, Gazole, Kaliachak and other areas due to the storm. According to the mango development officer in Malda, 85 per cent of the mango orchard in the district was in full bloom. The MDO Mr S N Khara said: “Only a proper survey can assess the extent of the damage.” Power supply in most parts of the district also remains disrupted since last night due to the storm, which uprooted some poles as well.)

5. Interesting article
With growing populations.....short crops. It looks like the major exporter countries of these food crops are stopping their exports just to feed their own people. They talk about how they seem to have hit a yield plateau with growth in yields of less than 1% a year. But population growing much faster. No new green revolution on the horizon to significantly increase yields to match population growth.

I live within 10 minutes of the construction of what is purported to be the largest ethanol plant in the U.S....maybe the world.

World food prices doubling quickly. Aid agencies buying half as much food with the same amount of money...no increase in spending seen....

We are watching a world calamity playing out in it's early stages......
