Iran has demanded that the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) investigate "how Israel became a nuclear superpower," Army Radio reported Wednesday.

"What was the rationale that guided the governments of France and other nations in supplying the Zionist regime with nuclear weapons?" Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki asked at a UN session in Geneva Tuesday night.

Iran and a number of nations were "willing to look into the matter," he said.

Mottaki also called for a worldwide nuclear disarmament, claiming that " weapons are just as illegal as chemical and biological weapons."

Israel has not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and according to foreign reports, has a large arsenal of nuclear weapons.

Mottaki's comments came days after the UN Security Council approved new sanctions on Iran for its refusal to halt uranium enrichment.

Teheran on Tuesday rejected the new UN resolution, calling it "worthless" and "politically-motivated."

What a world....

I agree with them,
and am surprised it's taken this long for someone to point out the obvious.

3. Oh the hypocrisy....
Countries cooperating with the corporate agenda? Good.
Countries impeding the global elite? BAD.

5. That's my take on it too- you gotta appreciate the humor behind the action.

9. Of course it makes sense- that's the joke.
For all of the neocon saber rattling about nuclear weapons-
no one ever mentions the US friendly countries that HAVE them.
Pakistan is the one that scares me.

10. Sad, ain't it?
People talk about the "hypocrisy," but the "truth2power" is Israel is not a signatory of the NPT, and, therefore, not in violation. Iran is a signatory. Now, they have the right to withdraw from the treaty, but to cast doubt on another nation that is not a member, shows desperation on their part. Of course, just today (or yesterday) the Arab League said they would all withdraw from the NPT if Israel was revealed to have nuclear weapons.

11. So?
Proliferation is good if accomplished by not signing the NPT, but bad if you do?

13. What would be the point of keeping Iran from getting nukes, if not concern about proliferation?
We are talking about a country, after all, which hasn't waged aggressive war against a neighboring country since the Sassanid dynasty.

15. NPT
Doesn't matter what wars they have or haven't engaged in (red herring) as to preventing nuclear proliferation. They are a signatory to the NPT; Israel is not.

18. And that...
is the one thing that gives me considerable pause in accusing Iran of having a weapons program.

Countries that are not part of the NPT:
Israel - developed a nuclear arsenal
India - developed a nuclear arsenal
Pakistan - developed a nuclear arsenal
North Korea - very likely has 1-2 bombs, maybe more

So why stay in the NPT and have to endure all this BS if you can just cancel your club membership and dispense with all the IAEA scrutiny? What's the world gonna do, IMPOSE SANCTIONS? And that would be different from what's happening how exactly?

And the argument that Israel's arsenal isn't illegal because they didn't sign the NPT is technically correct, but is an ethically ridiculous position.

At the same time calling for an investigation of France's violation of the NPT in helping the Israeli nuclear weapons program is illogical as well: by the time the treaty came into effect in 1970, France's cooperation with Israel had ended and Israel already had at least half a dozen bombs. Since France's cooperation was prior to the NPT's existence, they did not violate the NPT either.

"So, is Israel saying they don't have to obey the law, but their rivals do?"

19. Everyone should be in the NPT OR
BE SANCTIONED. How do we even know what kind of status their nuclear weapons are in? Trust us? The guys who won't join the NPT? Iran is right to point this out. Whether or not Iran is following the NPT is as much a red herring as is whether or not Iran is as "aggressive" as Israel. Rules were made for the world to follow, not parts of the world, THE world.

Israel refuses to sign the NPT and is acknowledged to be a rogue nuclear state and a regional-- if not global-- threat. All this on our dime.
