Poll question: Should the tickets be balanced ..... Male/Female --- ???
Should there be a push to create a Male/Female balance in the Democratic ticket this time around?

1. We're already forcefed the Presidential candidates.
We don't need to limit the possibilities further.

6. My point is not that *we* get a choice.
But the requirement of a balanced ticket would force the Presidential candidate into a subset of all possibilities.

If the best VP possible was the same sex as the President, they would automatically be ineligible. So, I don't like that concept.

8. I don't know that a "push" is a "requirement" ---
basically, I think that maybe we need to encourage them to think more often in gender balanced terms . . . ???

And that the PUBLIC needs to, as well!!!

10. I think we need the best set of candidates.

The voters need to think in the gender balanced terms. As more women enter political office, more become strong choices for cabinet positions, and such.

I would love to see the right woman in the White House, in either position (or both). Just as long as the person is qualified, I'm all for it.

2. How about
Gay - Lesbian?

Christian - Jewish?

Jewish - Muslim?

Muslim - Hindu?

Taoist - Blackfoot?

I don't think so.

Shall we try Competent - Competent?

4. Taoist - Blackfoot?
That one is just ridiculous.

Blackfeet would NEVER run with Taoists.

Oh, well, maybe a transgender taoist...

5. Well, we've had this little "majority rule" thing going for quite some time . . .
Edited on Wed Mar-05-08 10:16 PM by defendandprotect
except women are the majority ---

Toss the religions; that's a choice ----

However, I think we'd probably benefit from a homosexual candidate --- male or female --
they come in both genders!!!

And --- I sure would like to try "competent" --- let's try it with the presidential candidates, first . . . !!!

something like Obama/Feinstein --- !!!!

So I voted . . . don't know ---

If we had someone like Mary Robinson around, I'd say PUSH, PUSH, PUSH . . .

9. Not necessarily
But /I am hoping Obama picks a woman. Gov Sebelius, specifically.

It's time we take the 50 state strategy to the next level, and start making the GOP fight for red states, even if we don;t end up winning them. It makes the GOP spend time and money, and inroads into the midwest builds on the inroads being made in the SW, SE, and West.

14. She is the Dem Gov of Kansas
She mentioned after a tornado wiped out a town that with the Nat guard equipment in Iraq, that they would not be able to repond quickly if there was another emergency.

She called on Clinton to not disregard Democratic voters in red states where democratic candidates such as herself have proven victory to be possible.

Here is her Wiki page. She is an impressive choice for VP, and I think a major instrument in making headway into mid-western and other red states.

11. Here we have two vicepresidents...
And by law, tickets have to be either 2 males and 1 female, or 2 females and 1 male.

15. Well, nearly 40% of members of congress are women...
Edited on Thu Mar-06-08 03:55 AM by arcos
Compare that with what? Probably 15%-20% of the US Congress? Our 38% is the third highest in the world, just after Sweden. (http://www.thelocal.se/6582/20070303/)

We have proportional representation, so party lists are used. By law, no gender should take up more than 60% of the "electable" spots ("electable" is an average of how many seats each party has won). At first a lot of people were opposed to this... but funny enough, now parties voluntarily go over the 40% minimum required for women, some even requiring that all party lists must alternate male-female-male-female (or viceversa) to guarantee parity. And right now, the congressional leaders of the three biggest parties in the country, are all women.

http://www.quotaproject.org/displayCountry.cfm?CountryCode=CR

We've had several female vicepresidents... the first from 1986 to 1990, and from 1994 on, including an administration that actually had two female vicepresidents (1998-2002). Also, over 45% of city council members in the country as a whole are female.

Costa Rica is a clear example that quotas DO work to increase female participation and relevance in politics. In fact, it is more than likely that a woman will be next President, considering two of the most popular politicians in the country, current vicepresident Laura Chinchilla and former vicepresidential candidate and congresswoman Epsy Campbell, are both pondering runs for President.

are the way to go --- !!!

Didn't read all of the links yet --- but did save them ---

This is a concept that I don't even think most Americans have ever even heard of ---

I've heard of it in regard to Sweden ---

and I thought that Canada was also making some moves in that direction, but don't recall exactly.

Nor had I heard of the particular ratio you mention --

Congratulations!!

16. Should there be a tiger and a gazelle?
or a lion and a lamb
or a dog and a cat
or an ant and a flea

Whomever is designated the winner will get to choose his/her running-mate (unless Cheney butts in and say's it's him again)
