Rewind on the Columbia/Venezuela situation

Why did Columbia strike the FARC at the height of hostage negotiations?

That doesn't pass the smell test one bit. Could the US have instigated/approved the attack because the successful negotiations that Chavez was doing would have made him look good?

Is there another plausible explanation?

1. You've raised an interesting point
because we know the right wing Colombian government is in bed with that family. It seems unlikely they'd have acted without approval with sensitive negotiations going on.

One thing to remember is that massing troops on the border of a country that has crossed it is a prudent precaution. Nobody's started shooting yet, neither Ecuador nor Venezuela.
