OK, I'm an idealist, I'm not religious. But I think morality is a social guide. Don't kill, number one. Seems to make sense to me. Don't lie and don't steal are next, and are almost the same thing.

1. If knowledge is power
then overcomplicating things is always a way to gain power.

Look at our financial system, if you dare. Consider the derivatives market, a market of essentially worthless paper that nonetheless represents some $405 trillion in world financial institutions. Once you begin to understand that system, your power comes from knowing nothing is holding it up but hot air and wishful thinking and you can plan accordingly, like dumping investments you might have in institutions that are part of it.

Most people have barely heard the word "derivative" and few understand what it means. If they did, there would be blind panic right about now.

6. every time a society has tried to simplify any law
The lawyers come in and convince everyone that it wont work. Complexity makes it possible for many more people to work at law firms and government offices.

Taxes are complicated so that the poor have no idea how to shelter any money. You have to be able to hire specialists for that.

Religion is complicated so that there will always be doubt as to the state of a (sucker) parishioners soul.
