To ensure the 2008 elections turn our nation in a positive, progressive direction, union members must combine forces with civil rights and women’s activists and create a joint agenda for candidates—and hold them accountable when they are elected.

More than 50 people took a first step in creating that agenda last week at the National Labor College (NLC) in Silver Spring, Md. The Feb. 29 symposium, “The Action Agenda for African Americans and Women: Where Does Labor Fit In?” is part of the college’s celebration of Black History and Women’s History months.

Eleanor Smeal, president of the Feminist Majority Foundation, sounded the theme of the conference, when she said:
It’s time for us to get together and get it together.
Yvonne Scruggs-Leftwich, an NLC faculty member and organizer of the symposium, said:
The united forces of women’s rights, civil rights and the workers’ rights are a powerful force for creating and advancing a progressive agenda, which will find a receptive audience in the current environment for change.
