CA Station Sells Gas For $5 A Gallon
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/03/06/ca-station-sells-gas-for-_n_90223.html

Gas prices in California are at an all-time high. The statewide average price for a gallon of regular is now 58 cents more per gallon, than the same time last year.

But, there is one place on the Central Coast where you can expect to pay more than $5 a gallon. The Americo gas station in the tiny coastal town of Gorda, about 40 miles south of Big Sur, is selling gasoline for $5.19 a gallon for regular, and $5.39 for premium.

Despite high prices, the local gas stop grabs customers, without any competition. And according to locals, the pain at the pump isn't over yet... as they plan to raise the prices another 20 cents in the coming weeks.

2. Good grief
I live in CA and spent $3.42 a gallon today and thought that was high. The last time I filled up it was about 40 cents a gallon less.

3. The gas companies can go fuck themselves
Everyone is feeling the pinch because of these insane prices. There is no fucking reason gas should be as high as it is. And of course, our Congress, in its infinite wisdom, isn't going to do jack shit about it.

8. Why should they
when they have American exurbanites bent over the SUV already?

They are going to fuck them hard.

Just last week I was in the Missouri Capitol and talked among others to a MoDOT employee who was proud of her two SUVs. She seemed to think there was no tipping point.

$5/gal is *the* tipping point. It is about .50 over what I think is the tipping point.

I have been yelling at them for over four years now that without public transit statewide, that there would be a day when the tipping point was reached, and the oil economy would be unworkable, and on that day, without public transit, there would be torches and there would be pitchforks, there would be tar, feathers... and a big wooden rail.

$5.16 a gal south of the Big Sur will be $4.79 on I-70 inter urban and $4.50 in KC, STL, Columbia and Jeff. This is the kick in the head I have been going on about. This is Missouri with a new 45% non motorist modeshare. The same Missouri, I might add that has the fifth largest number of highway miles and is a DOT donor nation at the Fed level.

Now I want MoDot, to tell me, how will these Missourians make it from St. Charles to the Central West End? How will they get from Grain Valley to the College Blvd?

Oh, and will there be jobs without affordable shipping? Petroleum feedstocks?
But the oil companies are laughing themselves sick. We are all Aunt Millie now.

12. I live in Southern California. The big, gas-guzzling vehicle capital of the world.

And my town is especially retarded. We could have voted for a train station that would have been built near the bottom of my street. Instead, what did we do? We voted to expand CA-91 (the closest freeway) which:

- Will cost BILLIONS (that we do not have because Orange County is fucking bankrupt)
- Will tear up the environment
- Will fuck up the freeway even more so than it already is
- Will take YEARS
- Oh and there's no available room to do so

We could've built a train station which would've avoided all that but the fucking NIMBYS (not in my backyard!!!) voted against it. Instead we have more houses being built, the freeway being made winder, and more gas-guzzling vehicles on the road. :grr:

16. Obviously more fatal beatings are needed.
With Caltrans and everything, the NIMBYville idiots will be the first ones screaming that they can't get to work from bigboxland.

9. That station typically has the highest prices in the state
if not the entire country.

Gorda is a tiny town on Highway 1 that's about 40 miles north and 50 miles south of the next gas station. It's kinda what you call your "last-chance gas."

I heard KPIX tease to this last night. They didn't identify the station or the town, but said it was in the Salinas-Monterey area. That's a bit of a stretch.

11. I drive a little car that gets over 40 mpg. If I had the money, I'd drive a hybrid...
So this is not causing me a whole lot of misery, because I really don't fill up often.

I know that we end up paying more for everything because trucks ship everything, but

if everyone had been buying cars that get over 35 mpg over the last decade instead of those stupid SUV's they would have a lot less to whine about.

In fact, the prices at the pump would be lower now because the demand would be lower if the average car used half as much gas.

But people keep driving those behemoths and gladly handing over their hard-earned money to the oil companies.

I'll never understand it.

14. I've gotten gas in Gorda before
Edited on Thu Mar-06-08 11:11 PM by Art_from_Ark
I was driving some fat-assed gas guzzler that some rental company had pushed on me because that was "all that was available" when gas gauge needle started going down fast on that lonely highway. No other place to get gas-- and it was quite a bit higher than those gas stations I had passed by in Monterey because they were "too high".
