Bush, McCain dine on hot dogs in White House lunch

WEST PALM BEACH, Florida (Reuters) - President George W. Bush may have given presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain the royal treatment at the White House on Wednesday, but the two men did not exactly have a meal fit for a king.....

This headline caught my eye because it reminded of once before when the President of the USA used the same ploy to lie to the People of America. Headlines back then were that FDR and the King of England had hot dogs for lunch on the White House lawn. The Plain Folk were much impressed at how well FDR had put the Royals "in their place". A few months later saw the death of thousands of American young men trying to protect the English Royals from their natural enemy -- the Germans. The Plain Folk lost again. I wonder what we will lose after The Mac and The Bush dined on hotdogs ?

But in this case with McBush, maybe they literally did eat hot dogs. Maybe a St Bernard and a Beagle. I wouldn't put THAT past these two.

2. I buy kosher beef hotdogs for the family. They are a bit more
expensive and tastier than the typical hotdog. But I don't eat meat anymore.

6. Non meat is the way to go.
"But I don't eat meat anymore."

I'm with you. I'm not off meat completely but I eat only a couple of servings a week. Small servings.

3. Actually, FDR served the Royals hot dogs at a picnic in Hyde Park,
not at the White House.

(snip)

Fifty years ago today the British King and Queen came here on a diplomatic visit and made gastronomic history. They ate their first hot dogs.

That event, when King George VI and Queen Elizabeth picnicked at the invitation of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his wife, Eleanor, was re-enacted here today at Springwood, the Roosevelt home on the Hudson River, as part of a daylong celebration of the royal visit.

No member of the royal family was present today, but Queen Elizabeth, the mother of the present Queen, Elizabeth II, sent a message recalling her visit to the United States as ''an idyllic experience.''

She did not mention the hot dogs in the message, but in a note to Mrs. Roosevelt in 1940 she recalled the picnic as ''great fun.'' Her children, Princess Elizabeth, now Queen Elizabeth II, and Princess Margaret Rose, were thrilled, she said, at her description of the picnic and the hot dogs.

10. Fifty years ago?
LOL, I was scratching my head working fuzzy math until I noticed the article was dated 1989 and the hot dog event happened in 1939. Hot dogs do taste better eaten outside.

4. Kind of a side note, but absolutely true.
Bush prefers his hot dogs boiled, ballpark style. Not grilled.

5. FDR? On DU you're dissing FDR.
What the hell? That was World War 2 - Hitler the Nazis, the Final solution, The conquest of western Europe, the Fight against Fascism? Pearl Harbor? This was not some cold war game. To suggest that FDR was doing that to aid the royals against Britain's natural enemy (which was France mostly given the number of wars they fought)is to spout the line that the GOP took during the buildup to World War 2 - which is pretty ill advised yes?

FDR was an aristocrat but he for example never turned armed troops on veterans (see the Bonus Army)
