Westboro Baptist Church, a group known for protesting and picketing funerals and memorials of fallen soldiers, is planning to picket at the Sunday afternoon funeral of 18-year-old Auburn freshman Lauren Burk, according to the group’s Web site. Burk was killed Tuesday night. Police are investigating her death as a murder.

Westboro Baptist Church, established in 1955, is an Kansas-based organization lead by Pastor Fred Phelps.

The group is also planning to picket the funeral of Eve Carson, UNC student body president who was killed Wednesday morning.

Both funerals are listed on the WBC site’s online picket schedule for Sunday.

Man arrested in Lauren Burk killing

WSB-TV reported there has been an arrest in connection with Auburn freshman Lauren Burk, of Marietta. The arrest was reportedly made in Phenix City, Ala. after a high-speed chase. WSB did not identify the man who was arrested, but reported that a Phenix City investigator said that the man was found with evidence that could link him to the Burk case.

Phenix City police officials could not be immediately reached to confirm the report.

A Burk family spokeswoman Kathy Singleton said the family had not been notified of an arrest in Phenix City, but had heard the news through media reports Friday evening.

2. Two things
1- If the guy arrested is indeed the guy who did the killing, let's hope he gets life w/o parole and 2-Put the Phelps people in there with him. They are no better than he is.

18. I've been trying to figure that out myself
They all live together and there aren't many members of their congregation who aren't family. How do they get the money to travel to all these places?

They lost a suit brought by a Marines family -- they protested at his funeral and his family sued and won. 8 million I think?

4. So, now they're just randomly picketing any funeral?
What a bunch of losers! Geez, what is wrong with these people?

My sympathies to the young women's families on their losses. Its not fair that in addition to that they have to deal with cruel and insensitive idiots while in such a state.

I'm at a loss--why would Phelps be picketing their funerals???

6. Demonstrate WHAT, picket WHAT, protest WHAT!
Phelps-led Westboro Baptist have proven themselves hate-mongers and bigots.

What excuse are they going to assert as their "cause" for desecrating the dead and spreading their hatred, THIS TIME?

Incredible!

I do hope these families are provided advance notice so that A LINE can be created to separate the hate-mongering fanatics from the decent people.

Get some men with "wooly faces" (aka balaclavas), some tar and some feathers and make an example of one or two of the Phelps clan.

I'm actually surprised this guy is still alive... I mean, when people lose a member of their family, they may be in a state in which they do things they wouldn't usually do. Ya know?

10. One marine's father sued Phelps and won...
Marine dad wins funeral protesters lawsuit

By Alex Dominguez - The Associated Press
Posted : Friday Nov 2, 2007 11:50:24 EDT

BALTIMORE — The father of a fallen Marine was awarded nearly $11 million Wednesday in damages by a jury that found leaders of a fundamentalist church had invaded the family’s privacy and inflicted emotional distress when they picketed the Marine’s funeral.

The jury awarded $2.9 million in compensatory damages and $8 million in punitive damages, $6 million for invasion of privacy and $2 million for causing emotional distress to the Marine’s father, Albert Snyder of York, Pa.

Snyder sued the Topeka, Kan.-based Westboro Baptist Church for unspecified monetary damages after members staged a demonstration at the March 2006 funeral of his son, Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, who was killed in Iraq.

The defense said it planned to appeal and one of the church’s leaders, Shirley Phelps-Roper, said the members would continue their pickets of military funerals.

Frankly, the man and his church should have been prosecuted for hate crimes,...

BUT,...we are living under the BUSHCO tyranny that sucks up divisions as it advantages their aims.

17. The Phelpses don't need an excuse. They simply protest funerals following high-profile tragedies
because they see all tragedies that take place in America--from natural catastrophes to accidents to murders--as God's vengeance on the country for refusing to arrest and execute its entire gay population.

According to the Phelpses, gays are evil and should not be suffered to live. Because America tolerates them, it brings all such tragedies upon itself--from 9/11 to Katrina to the Minnesota bridge collapse to the Virginia Tech shootings to these poor young women being murdered.

They claim that each such horrible event causes them to rejoice, because each one is yet another sign of God's justified wrath, telling America to turn away from evil and begin outlawing homosexuality on pain of death...or else the tragedies will go on happening.

That's what kind of sickos they are. And that's why they picket military funerals...they rejoice when American soldiers die, because America is evil for allowing gays to live.

23. They seek out high profile funerals for publicity.
They are sick and evil. What makes it even worse is that they are indoctrinating the young children of the family into this hatred. They bring them to the funeral protests and have them hold up signs and shout at the mourners.

19. I wish people could do something minor to them while they picket.
Nothing dangerous or expensive to fix, just a pie in the face or buckets of cold water to make them uncomfortable, possibly to the point of having to leave. If I was on a jury I wouldn't find them guilty of anything.

My heart goes out to those grieving families. Two innocent, young women murdered in cold blood and now Phelps' group plans to add to their misery.

25. It is deplorable for them to protest ANY funeral, a gay person's or not.
I'm just as outraged by the protest at these students' funerals as I am at a protest at any gay person's funeral.
