Democratic superdelegates in Nebraska may become less than free agents if Nebraska Democrat Vince Powers gets his way Saturday.
Powers wants five of the state's six superdelegates to back the Democratic presidential candidate that wins the state's May 13 primary.
Powers, who is a superdelegate and a Barack Obama supporter, said the idea is to make the state's primary relevant during this supercharged and tight-rope presidential nomination battle.
He also said it would be a way to answer criticism from presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton that caucuses are not true reflections of support because, she and her supporters have said, only a small minority take the time to attend caucuses.
"We would double our fun," said Powers, who is the state party’s national committeman and was behind the party's first-ever caucus last month.
Steve Achelpohl, chairman of the State Democratic Party and an undecided superdelegate, said he is open to the idea but worries about changing the rules in midstream.
