Condoleezza Rice Was "Bombarded" with Warnings Before 9/11, Commission Biased Against Clarke
from AlterNet's PEEK:

Condoleezza Rice Was "Bombarded" with Warnings Before 9/11, Commission Biased Against Clarke

Posted by Faiz Shakir, Think Progress at 5:28 AM on March 8, 2008.

9/11 Commission staff director Philip Zelikow was not interested in pursuing criticisms against Rice.

New York Times reporter Philip Shenon’s new book — The Commission: The Uncensored History of the 9/11 Investigation — paints a damning portrait of Condoleezza Rice. Shenon argues that Rice was “uninterested in actually advising the President,” but was instead more concerned with being his “closest confidante — specifically on foreign policy — and to simply translate his words into action.”

Today’s Sydney Morning Herald prints an extract from Shenon’s book which provides further details about Rice’s incompetence. “Emails from the National Security Council’s counter-terrorism director, Richard Clarke, showed that he had bombarded Rice with messages about terrorist threats” before 9/11, Shenon writes. Some examples:

“Bin Ladin Public Profile May Presage Attack” (May 3)

“Terrorist Groups Said Co-operating on US Hostage Plot” (May 23)

“Bin Ladin’s Networks’ Plans Advancing” (May 26)

“Bin Ladin Attacks May Be Imminent” (June 23)

“Bin Ladin and Associates Making Near-Term Threats” (June 25)

“Bin Ladin Planning High-Profile Attacks” (June 30)

“Planning for Bin Ladin Attacks Continues, Despite Delays” (July 2)

But 9/11 Commission staff director Philip Zelikow was not interested in pursuing criticisms against Rice. Zelikow — who had worked closely with Rice on the Bush transition team in 2000 and 2001 — “made it clear to the team’s investigators that Clarke should not be believed, that his testimony would be suspect.”

When 9/11 Commission historian Warren Bass uncovered a smoking gun email from Clarke to Rice written on September 4, 2001, which asked, “Are we serious about dealing with the al-Qaeda threat?,” Zelikow reverted to defending Condi. Bass then threatened to resign:

“I cannot do this,” Bass declared… “Zelikow is making me crazy.”

He was outraged by Zelikow and the White House; Bass felt the White House was trying to sabotage his work by its efforts to limit his ability to see certain documents from the NSC files and take useful notes from them. … Bass made it clear to colleagues that he believed Zelikow was interfering in his work for reasons that were overtly political - intended to shield the White House, and Rice in particular, from the commission’s criticism.

The former weapons inspector in Iraq — David Kay — passed word to the 9/11 Commission that he believed Rice was the “worst national security adviser” in the history of the job.

1. 9/11
Is anyone surprised about this?
If bush and his gang of thugs did not plan for this to happen, they did nothing to stop it. The only things with them were their hatred for Clinton and also their grab for power. Nothing else interested them. Don't bother them with possible terrorist threats, they are too busy screwing the American public for monetary and political gain.

55. Heads-Up To Ashcroft Proves Threat Was Known Before 9/11
Heads-Up To Ashcroft Proves Threat Was Known Before 9/11
by Harley Sorensen

Don't let them fool you, folks: They knew.

They might have been surprised by the ferocity of the attacks, but the highest-ranking members of the George W. Bush administration knew before Sept. 11 that something terrible was going to happen soon.

Bush knew something was going to happen involving airplanes. He just didn't know what or exactly when. His attorney general, John Ashcroft, knew. His national security advisor, Condoleezza Rice, knew. They all knew.

And, in spite of its apparent ineptness, the FBI knew, too.

Not only did they all know, but they told us. Obliquely. And we didn't pay attention. Why would we? Then, as now, terrorist threats were a dime a dozen.

Is this my opinion? No, it's published fact.

On July 26, 2001, cbsnews.com reported that John Ashcroft had stopped flying on commercial airlines.

Ashcroft used to fly commercial, just as Janet Reno did. So why, two months before Sept. 11, did he start taking chartered government planes?

CBS News correspondent Jim Stewart asked the Justice Department.

Because of a "threat assessment" by the FBI, he was told. But "neither the FBI nor the Justice Department ... would identify what the threat was, when it was detected or who made it," CBS News reported.

The FBI did advise Ashcroft to stay off commercial aircraft. The rest of us just had to take our chances.

The FBI obviously knew something was in the wind. Why else would it have Ashcroft use a $1,600-plus per hour G-3 Gulfstream when he could have flown commercial, as he always did before, for a fraction of the cost?

is just a limited hangout to try and halt the impact the 9/11 truthers are having in making the case for LIHOP or MIHOP. Anyway, where does "incompetence" end and criminal negligence begin?

35. Yes
In 2004 as "Tex Shelters, Billionaire for Bush" I would taunt young Republican who told be that he felt safer with Bush in the White House by stating the obvious (to me at least): Bush was president when we were attacked and he ignored the warnings and didn't prevent the tragedy. Then I would ask, "Now, why do you feel safer with Bush as President?" They of course, had no answer. It's sad that so many patriots like Pat Tillman lost their lives in a war based on a lie and incompetency.

14. When I'm incompetent, I loose. I'm held accountable in some way.
Maybe it is a personal loss of prestige or money or simply failure to achieve an aim. But when the Bush gang are "incompetent," they win -- big time. Money, power, prestige -- and they are never "held accountable" to anyone or anything. Go figure.

Yes, I agree, the recent emergence of all this "incompetence theory," as criminally negligent as it is, still keeps the lid on the cover-up. It wasn't "negligence" that brought down the twin towers and building seven. It wasn't "negligence" that underfunded and misdirected the 9/11 Commission. It wasn't "negligence" that gave us a flight 77 data recorder with data that does NOT match the physical damage path at the Pentagon. 9/11 was a false-flag terror event and it is long past time the truth finally got through.

"Incompetence" has been the mainline media/establishment friendly criticism of this crime syndicate all along. Why? It's much safer than calling them by their true name: a bunch of mass murdering, war profiteering fascists ... and don't forget all the complicitous aid they've received along the way. Silence = consent.

22. This is what really gets my "pet" goat ...
I know many otherwise intelligent people that simply do not want to even be exposed to the evidence of 9/11.

Now this is where it gets me and I would love for people like Bill Maher and all the others that for the most part don't believe a thing that comes from the bush administration, yet, for some unconceivable reason believe everything the bush administration tells them about 9/11.

What's up with that?

People that seem reasonable, intelligent, practical, critical, skeptical and pragmatic who spit when they hear bush's name mentioned, but when it comes to 9/11, bush becomes an innocent to be believed. Everything he says is gospel and anyone that says bush&co might actually be behind 9/11 is crazy and should be silenced, ridiculed or worse. In bush's own words "Let us not tolerate outrageous conspiracy theories ..." , why would bush say something like this right after the attacks before people even started to seriously question the events of 9/11? Was this a warning to those that might?

Why is this? What makes otherwise rational people blind with rage concerning 9/11? It's not like they wouldn't agree that our government hasn't committed horrendous crimes or "false flag" operations before? The attack on the USS Liberty, Gulf of Tomkin are well documented. Operation Northwoods, Tuskegee Experiments and many more crimes that have killed thousands and laid waste to millions of lives they would ready agree happened and that is our government with the blood of those crimes on their hands. Yet, bring up the possibility that 9/11 was an inside job - and all of a sudden their minds shut off and we're the crazy ones ... why?

Seriously, I think they're cowards in every sense of the word. They're cowards intellectually because they refuse to allow their minds to accept the possibility and their cowards because once they did they know they'd have to act and they're simply afraid. They're afraid to act. And that by definition is being a coward.

23. Even with rational, skeptical people - myself included - there's a cognitive dissonance with 9/11...
.... Contemplating that our government, no matter how rancid BushCo is, could have intentionally allowed or even orchestrated the attacks is too much to deal with, despite the gaping holes in the official story.

30. "... to much to deal with..."
What exactly is "too much to deal with"? If it's real and you deal with it or you're a coward. I don't mean to be harsh or demeaning but it's not like 9/11 isn't important and must be dealt with. Running from it just because one "can't deal with it" simply isn't good enough.

And not only is it not being dealt with, those that are questioning it are now being targeted and this is simply intolerable. This is when people should stand up and not remain silent. This is not a time to be squeamish.

And as I mentioned it's not like our government hasn't committed horrendous crimes before, so please, what makes you not believe they wouldn't do it this time? This is what I don't get? If you know they're liars and murders why believe what they tell you concerning 9/11?

33. And don't neglect to mention Operation Gladio.
During the cold war NATO and the CIA established "stay behind" armies in various European countries to engage any invading Soviet force in an underground resistance campaign (like the French Resistance in WWII). In some countries, Italy for one, these stay behind armies were infiltrated with fascist and Nazis and cooperated with and provided explosives etc. to underground fascist and far right groups. These groups in turn staged deadly terror attacks on civilian targets in Italy and other countries. These terror attacks and the resulting deaths were then blamed by government and the media on leftist radicals and communists and used to discredit politicians on the left.

See the book "NATO's Secret Armies: Operation Gladio and Terrorism in Western Europe" by Swiss author Daniel Ganser for details (or just use Google).

From the synopsis on Ganser's book at Amazon.co.uk (link above):

The CIA and the British secret service MI6, in collaboration with the military alliance NATO and European military secret services set up a network of clandestine anticommunist armies in Western Europe after World War II. The secret soldiers were trained on remote islands in the Mediterranean and in unorthodox warfare centers in England and in the United States by the Green Berets and SAS Special Forces. The network was armed with explosives, machine guns and high-tech communication equipment hidden in underground bunkers and secret arms caches in forests and mountain meadows. In some countries the secret army linked up with right-wing terrorist who in a secret war engaged in political manipulation, harrassement of left wing parties, massacres, coup 'Etats and torture. Codenamed "Gladio" ('the sword'), the Italian secret army was exposed in 1990 by Italian Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti to the Italian Senate, whereupon the press spoke of "The best kept, and most damaging, political-military secret since World War II" (Observer, 18. November 1990) and observed that "The story seems straight from the pages of a political thriller." (The Times, November 19, 1990).

The BBC broadcast a 3 part documnetary on Operation Gladio which is available through Google video. Just go to http://video.google.com and type in "BBC Operation Gladio" in the search bar.

54. Exactly ...
This among many others, some that were even carried out over a number of years involving thousands of people, yet somehow some people refuse to believe they wouldn't be behind 9/11?

I just love it when people say, "it would take thousands of people", as though that makes 9/11 impossible, yet they readily believe a handful of cavemen could pull it off and never see the duplicity of what they're saying. If it would take thousands of people to pull it off, how than can a handful of cavemen?

It also took thousands of people over several years to kill millions of people in the death camps of Nazi Germany and if Germany would of won WWII we may never have found out about them. It's not like those committing the crimes went around bragging about it. So wouldn't it stand to reason a few hundred evil people in positions of power could pull off 9/11?

Sink the BFEE: Foley gives us Congress. Condi sends 'em to prison.

Rice More Sordid Than Foley

by Robert Scheer
Published on Wednesday, October 4, 2006 by Truthdig.com

They are such liars. And no, I am not speaking only of the dissembling GOP House leaders led by Speaker Dennis Hastert who, out of naked political calculation, covered up for one of their own in the sordid teen stalking case of Rep. Mark Foley.

Call me old school, but I am still more concerned with the Republicans molesting Lady Liberty while pretending to be guarding the nation’s security, an assignment which they have totally botched. The news about the Foley coverup, while important as yet another example of extreme hypocrisy on the part of the Republican virtues police, should not be allowed to obscure the latest evidence of administration deceit as to its egregious ineptness in protecting the nation.

On Monday, a State Department spokesman conceded that then-National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice had indeed been briefed in July 2001 by George Tenet, then-director of the CIA, about the alarming potential for an Al Qaeda attack, as Bob Woodward has reported in his aptly named new book, “State of Denial.”

“I don’t remember a so-called emergency meeting,” Rice had said only hours earlier, apparently still suffering from some sort of post-9/11 amnesia that seemed to afflict her during her forced testimony to the 9/11 Commission. The omission of this meeting from the final commission report is another example of how the Bush administration undermined the bipartisan investigation that the president had tried to prevent. Surely lying under oath in what was arguably the most important official investigation in the nation’s history should be treated more seriously than the evasiveness in the Paula Jones case that got President Bill Clinton impeached. Nor is it just Rice who should be challenged, for Tenet seems to have provided Woodward with details concerning the administration’s indifference to the terrorist threat that he did not share with the 9/11 Commission.

SNIP…

Such weaseling would be funny if the topic were not so serious. But there is no way Rice can squirm out of this one, despite her impressive track record of calculated distortion on everything from Iraq’s nonexistent WMDs to the trumped-up ties between Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. Can there be any better case for turning over control of at least one branch of Congress to the opposition party so that we might finally have hearings to learn the truth of this matter, which is far more important, and sordid, than the Foley affair?

47. That Alternet link led to a Think Progress link, which led to this:
http://thinkprogress.org/2008/03/08/rove-touts-mccains-adopted-daughter-he-smeared-in-2000/

Apparently, Karl Rove is now "advising" John McCain in some manner. No further proof needed that McCain is "Bush Lite". a vote for John McCain would be a vote to "preserve" the "Bush Legacy"!

48. Gary Hart-Co-Chair of the Hart-Rudman Commission warned Condi again on Sept. 6, 2001,
So there was absolutely no follow-up on your commission's recommendations once Bush referred the matter to Cheney?

Right.

And were you ever consulted again by the administration?

No. But as one of those fearing a near-term attack, I went out on my own throughout the spring and summer of 2001 saying, "The terrorists are coming, the terrorists are coming." One of the speeches I gave was, ironically enough, to the International Air Transportation Association in Montreal. And the Montreal newspapers headlined the story, "Hart predicts terrorist attacks on America."

By pre-arrangement I had gotten an appointment with Condi Rice the following day and had gone straight from Montreal to Washington to meet with her. And my brief message to her was, "Get going on homeland security, you don't have all the time in the world." This was on Sept. 6, 2001.

What was her response?

Her response was "I'll talk to the vice president about it." And this tracks with Clarke's testimony and writing that even at this late date, nothing was being done inside the White House.

And your sense from talking with Rice that day was ...

She didn't seem to feel a terrible sense of urgency. Her response was simply "I'll talk to the vice president about it."

51. Usually, When You "Hit The Trifecta" It's At Least A Surprise
How any real American can still be the firewall against impeachment for Lucky George, Dick Demento and Clueless Condi is beyond me.

And could well be beyond the judges at The Hague as well.

I'll be alot happier. Most people won't even know about it unless it's only the six o'clock news.

58. When pigs fly ...
Thinking the M$M is going to tell us the truth about 9/11 is like thinking a mob lawyer will stand-up in court and declare their mob-boss client guilty of all crimes - won't happen. It's unfortunate but most don't realize just how corrupt our entire system has become, the press, judges, legislators, up and down the line are compromised.

And for anyone that says you couldn't have thousands of people involved in a crime of this magnitude I point to Nazi Germany where thousands of people murdered millions of people over several years and no one would have found out about that if we hadn't won the war.

60. "Worst" anything gets you promoted in Bewshworld.
This is what happens when your country is run by a gaggle of evil voevods indifferent to the needs of everything except themseleves and their wealthy handlers. Also, having an electorate of people who share the same brain doesn't hurt your cause's advancement either.

Maybe people should also be asking what Bewsh's old man knew about 9/11 years prior . . . specifically about his little group's pre-9/11 buying spree and driving of the getaway car afterwards . . .

(snip) See, they're a private equity firm. Among other things, private equity firms buy companies, usually failing ones, in speculation that they (via investment, takeover, etc) can help them succeed in the future. Afterward, they sell the companies for a profit. Carlyle prefers buying companies that do business with the government. Starting in the early 90s, when the Cold War more or less ended and defense/military industries were in a funk, Carlyle bought a few of these companies dirt cheap.

Among their purchases (more on what they do later)?

* Vaught Aircraft
* USIS
* BDM, who owned Vinnell
* United Defense Industries.

(snip) Maybe this should be a question . . . did these men know what was about to happen?

One thing's for sure. They sure as hell made a fortune on those dirt-cheap companies they bought.
