Toddler rescued from burning house

Kansas City firefighters rescued a 2-year-old girl – left home alone – from a burning house about 2 this morning.

Smoke and fire were shooting from the house near 62nd Street and Benton Avenue when firefighters arrived. They discovered the girl behind a bedroom closet door during a blind search of the home, which was filled with thick smoke.

"The way they found her was just by feel, by touch," said Fire Department spokesman Joe Vitale.

The unconscious child was transported to a local hospital. Her condition was not released.

It wasn't immediately clear if the child lived at the house with her parents. The child's mother showed up at the house as firefighters prepared to leave the scene about an hour later.

She was taken into custody by police.

Vitale said investigators believe the fire was intentionally set. Damage is estimated to be about $45,000.

8. Sometimes, some stories catch our attention more than

other stories, and we feel the need to share them with others. It isn't necessarily because the poster has an agenda.

My father sent me a wonderful little story about a tiger fostering some piglets - I'm not sharing it on DU because it does fall under the category of "cute kitty" story . . . but I shared it on another board simply because it I thought it was worth sharing. No agenda, no intent to send a message - I just wanted to share it.

Perhaps the OP just wanted to share this story. It's not a nice story, but it is worth knowing.
