Japanese Open Fire on Sea Shepherd Crew: Three Injured

At 1545 hours (0445 GMT), a clash between the crew of the Sea Shepherd vessel Steve Irwin and the Japanese whaling ship Nisshin Maru turned violent when the Japanese Coast Guard began to throw flash grenades at the crew of the Steve Irwin.

Captain Paul Watson was struck by a bullet in the chest. Fortunately, the bullet was stopped by his Kevlar vest. The bullet struck just above the heart and mangled Captain Watson’s anti-poaching badge, which was worn on his sweater underneath the Kevlar vest.

Dr. David Page was videotaped prying the bullet from Captain Watson’s Kevlar vest. “You have been hit by a bullet,” he said.

The Kevlar vest and anti-poaching badge effectively saved Captain Watson’s life.

Steve Irwin was supposed to go with Sea Shepherd on this particular outing to the Antarctic Sea. Of course, that didn't happen with his untimely death. In honor of Steve, they renamed the ship, and he's there with them in spirit.

These people are wonderful, how long has Greenpeace suppose to stop this madness and the millions they have received in contributions. Although I respect GP I am delighted these wonderful people are getting publicity.

5. Problem is, the whalers aren't afraid of Greenpeace.

They take pics and document the slaughter, but they fail to *do* anything to stop it. SSCS, the whalers know, WILL intervene (as has been shown over and over).

Greenpeace has a budget of $100 million, and SSCS has around a $2 million budget for comparison. SSCS is more focused on marine wildlife, whereas Greenpeace has many other issues (to be fair).

I wish Irwin had been here to go on this mission.

9. Time to stop the insanity.

Whaling has to stop. It can either be now, or when all the whales are gone, but it must stop.

I don't understand the Japanese at all. They have to give this stuff away!

In a desperate attempt to revive the flagging market, the Institute for Cetacean Research (ICR) supplied the research by-product to 254 Yokohama schools over two days last month, hoping to give their young palates a taste for whale meat.

Faced with a reported 3000-tonne inventory of unsold meat from last year's cull, the ICR contacted the Yokohama City Education committee, suggesting the department include research meat in their school lunches.

A total of 200,000 lunches of whale meat salad marinated in sesame sauce were served on January 21 and 22. Yokohama children have not eaten whale meat as part of school lunches in 26 years.

The ICR refused to comment on its controversial programs.
