Parts of Ohio, Tenn. get a foot of snow

COLUMBUS, Ohio - A foot of snow buried parts of the Ohio and Tennessee valleys early Saturday, creating whiteout conditions and keeping many would-be weekend travelers at home.

Winter storm warnings were in effect from eastern Kentucky to upstate New York and northern Maine, the National Weather Service said. Wind up to 35 mph whipped the snow and cut visibility to less than a quarter mile in places, the weather service said.

"We're getting a lot of drifting and poor visibility out here," said State Highway Patrol Sgt. Rod Moser in Circleville, Ohio. Two semitrailers jackknifed on Interstate 71, about 20 miles south of Columbus, he said.

As much as 10 inches of snow fell overnight in Ohio, where up to 5 more inches was possible, and 13 inches fell on north-central Kentucky's Owen County, the National Weather Service said. Louisville, Ky., and Middle Tennessee got up to a foot, the weather service said. Up to a foot was possible by Sunday in western New York, meteorologists said. Even Mississippi got 5 to 7 inches of snow in northern parts of the state, the weather service said.

It was the deepest snow at Louisville since a storm in February 1998 dumped 22 inches over three days, the weather service said.

The wind piled snow into drifts as much as 5 feet high in parts of central Kentucky, police dispatcher John Woosley said.

It was a continuation of the storm that on Friday piled up snow a foot deep in Arkansas and blacked out thousands of homes and businesses from that state to the Great Lakes. .....(more)

1. Snow is up to the chest on my dogs...

...and they are big dogs with long legs. I think it's quite cool, myself (no pun intended). Sure, I missed going to some weekend events that I was looking forward to, but it was also a good excuse to stay home and get some things done. Filled the bird feeder twice today, with constant activity around it. As long as the heat stays on, I'm happy.

2. It may seem backward but climate -warming- causes MORE snow.

Some people see all this snow and think it debunks the warming theories but they don't understand that warmer temperatures actually create more snow-favorable conditions (more evaporation than previously in relatively 'cold' regions)

3. Makes sense. The coldest part of the winter is usually the driest and most snow-free....

..... So it makes sense that warmer winters might produce more snow.

I'm sitting here in Brook Park with 3 foot drifts in my back yard. I snow-blowed the drive twice now and two hours later you can't even tell i did it.

We have about 4 ft drifts, though. Did the cars and driveway a few times and can't tell. I heard that the city of Cleveland is out of salt, to boot.

Mine looks like that now....maybe worse. Went down to the Lake today and it's frozen so far out, and with the constant white-outs, you wouldn't even know that we had one.

28. We got ~ 15 inchs. I live in a micro climate in a river basin and we had more than

several blocks away from us. Took the dogs out for a late night walk in the woods last night about 11pm with the kids. It was so pictureque, but I'm still longing for spring.

that the Columbus Airport measured 20.4 inches since yesterday morning.
The drifts here in Lewis Center are as tall as my car. My kids
got a ride to friends house after school was dismissed early yesterday so
it's just me and the dogs baking cookies. I can think of worse ways
to spend a Saturday!

17. Haven't gone out all day in the Cleveland area.

Got out of work early yesterday afternoon, and a normal half-hour bus commute took two hours. Stayed in today. Can't see anything out the windows, it's all white. The guy on the Weather Channel was downtown and getting buffeted something terrible. Said the city was deserted.
