Question: what happens if the nominated Republican is ill or passes away before election day?
This is probably a valid question for either party, but seems particularly relevant as McCain with his "legendary temper" would seem to be a high risk for stroke or heart attack . . .

I would assume that if it happened before the Republican convention, the Repubs would nominate someone else (minor crisis for them: Huckabee? Guliani? Thompson?).

If it happened after the convention but before general election, would they be stuck running the ticket chosen?

3. Would they be stuck and have to have a run off?
I don't know. I think it should go to a steel cage match.

for a dead Presidential nominee.

My guess is the Vice-Presidential nominee would move to the top of the ticket and then he or she would pick someone to be their VP runningmate with the approval of the respective parties.

7. Dead Democrat Wins Election
Dead Democrat Wins Election

http://michaelscomments.wordpress.com/2006/11/11/dead-democrat-wins-election/

MONROE, N.C. -

A candidate for a county board who appeared in newspaper ads the weekend before the election sailed
to victory with 12,000 votes — despite being dead for a month. Sam Duncan was the top vote-getter

Tuesday for two seats on Union County’s Soil and Water Conservation board.

Although county elections officials knew of Duncan’s death, no one told the voters.

“We are instructed that it’s not our job to do that,” said Shirley Secrest, elections director.

The Democratic Party ran newspaper endorsement ads about Duncan and literature distributed near
the polls included his name. Party officials said they didn’t know Duncan had died.

A dead guy beat John Ashcroft for the MO Senate seat in 2000. The widow took the seat in violation of the US Constitution, which says to be elected, you must be a resident of that state on the day of the election. I don’t think a dead guy can be a resident anywhere, reside being a synonym for live.
