A day after the U.S. military announced that overall violence was down in Iraq, eight American soldiers were killed in a pair of attacks. That's the highest single-day toll in months, and it's not the only recent incident of violence.

March 11 (Reuters) - Following are security developments in Iraq at 1525 GMT on Tuesday.

* NEAR NASSIRIYA - A roadside bomb hit a bus carrying a family returning from a funeral near the southern Iraqi city of Nassiriya, killing at least 14 people and wounding 10, Iraqi police and the British military said.

* NEAR SAMARRA - The bodies of 20 decomposed people, including six women and five children, were found dumped in a mass grave near the city of Samarra, 100 km (60 miles) north of Baghdad, police said. They blamed al Qaeda for the deaths.

* BAGHDAD - Around 20 gunmen attacked a juvenile prison and freed five prisoners in Baghdad, police said. Three guards and three prisoners were wounded in the attack.

* BAGHDAD - U.S. forces have killed five insurgents and detained 11 suspects in the past two days during operations to disrupt al Qaeda networks operating in central and northern Iraq, the U.S. military said.

* NEAR KERBALA - A roadside bomb targeted a police patrol, wounding three policemen and a child near the city of Kerbala, 110 km (70 miles) southwest of Baghdad, police said.

* YUSUFIYA - A bomb planted inside the city council building in the town of Yusufiya, 15 km (9 miles) south of Baghdad, killed one person and wounded eight, police said.

* BAIJI - Gunmen killed a police officer on Monday in the city of Baiji, 180 km (110 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.

* THAR THAR - A suicide car bomb killed two members of a U.S.-backed neighbourhood police patrol and wounded three others when it hit their checkpoint in Thar Thar, 80 km (50 miles) northwest of Baghdad, police said.

* NEAR KIRKUK - A roadside bomb wounded three U.S.-backed neighbourhood police when it targeted their car in a town southwest of Kirkuk, police said.

MOSUL - Four policemen and a civilian were killed when unidentified gunmen attacked a police checkpoint in Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) north of Baghdad, police said. Four of the gunmen were also killed.

DIYALA - Three U.S. soldiers and an interpreter were killed and another soldier wounded by a roadside bomb in Diyala province, northeast of Baghdad, on Monday, the U.S. military said.

BAGHDAD - The bodies of three people were found in Baghdad on Monday, police said.

KIRKUK - Two policemen were wounded when a roadside bomb exploded near their patrol in Kirkuk, 250 km (155 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.

BAGHDAD - One Iraqi soldier was wounded when a roadside bomb exploded near his patrol in western Baghdad's Mansour district, police said.

4. In guerilla warfare

the insurgents learn (very quickly) to lay low and out wait a concentration of troops, knowing the occupier can not maintain, logisitically, such a heavy concentration. Then they resume operations either in a new area or in the area the troops had recently occupied.
