9. There goes the "only person who might stop the Bush administration from going to war against Iran
Remember it was speculated he would do this if Bush and Cheney were set on getting their Iran war on before the end of the year.

14. Well now, that puts an interesting spin on things.
I forgot about that. If that is why he quit, then this could me more booosh shenanigans before he "leaves" office.

Gates is saying it's ridiculous to think this has anything to do with their policy on Iran. Then he hurried out of the presser.

21.  Fallon resigns as Mideast military chief
WASHINGTON - Adm. William Fallon, the top U.S. military commander for the Middle East, is resigning, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Tuesday.

Gates said Fallon had asked him Tuesday morning for permission to retire and Gates agreed. Gates said the decision was entirely Fallon's and that Gates believed it was "the right thing to do."

Fallon was the subject of an article published last week in Esquire magazine that portrayed him as opposed to President Bush's Iran policy. It described Fallon as a lone voice against taking military action to stop the Iranian nuclear program.

Gates described as "ridiculous" any notion that Fallon's departure signals the United States is planning to go to war with Iran. And he said "there is a misperception" that Fallon disagrees with the administration's approach to Iran.

27. Harry Reid's statement:
http://thinkprogress.org/2008/03/11/fallon-resigns/

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has issued this statement:

I am concerned that the resignation of Admiral William J. Fallon, commander of all U.S. forces in the Middle East and a military leader with more than three decades of command experience, is yet another example that independence and the frank, open airing of experts’ views are not welcomed in this Administration.

It is also a sign that the Administration is blind to the growing costs and consequences of the Iraq war, which has so damaged America’s security interests in the Middle East and beyond. Democrats will continue to examine these matters very closely in the coming weeks and months.
