Incident involving woman referee results in likely policy change

TOPEKA | The Kansas State High School Activities Association today took a step toward making schools like St. Mary’s Academy amend their policies or choose not to be part of the association.

By unanimously approving a measure to develop anti-discrimination language into future applications, the association’s executive board effectively said this: let women officiate.

The policy should be in effect as of the 2008-09 academic year.

“What we need to do is make sure these types of situations don’t arise again,” executive director Gary Musselman said.

The controversy stems from a Feb. 2 game at St. Mary’s, when basketball referee Michelle Campbell was not allowed to officiate at a boys’ game because of her gender. Her officiating partner, Darin Putthoff of Topeka, told The Kansas City Star that a St. Mary’s official explained it to him by saying it would be putting a woman in a position of authority over boys.

She is probably the worst ref in the NBA who doesn't actually owe money to the Mafia. But David Stern is terrified of the backlash if he got rid of her.
