Great News .... My good friend's son is coming home from Iraq.
For 16 months he has been a gunner on a Humvee in Baghdad and Sadr City and as of now he is COMING HOME. I talked to his mom as she was driving in North Carolina to see him as his unit returns to their home base. She is going for the 5 minute hug .... I told her go for 10 minutes.

1. 10 minutes is a good start.
Then, she needs to go buy him a steak, and she can hug him again for 20 minutes as they wait for it to arrive... :-) Great news!

They will join up in N. Carolina so as to cook for "xxxx" * and all his friends. I have known the family for years .... and I guarantee that everybody will be well taken care of and that anybody whose family couldn't make to welcome them back will be made to feel like family. * Edited to keep his name out of this thread.

7. When my brother got back from Iraq, I don't think his feet touched the ground.
My mom, who is 2' shorter than he is, was practically carrying him around with a hug.

10. I told her that he has made it out of Iraq alive ....
Edited on Tue Mar-11-08 06:23 PM by Botany
... she better not love him to death. From what I have been told almost everybody in his unit from the Capt. on down knows Iraq is a lost cause and the universal joke among the men was, "And why are we here?"

12. That's a tough position for them to be in.
When you feel like you're only fighting for your buddies, and have no other cause, you can become extremely cynical, and rightfully so.

They used the line when under fire
I know that the bond between he and his friends was the one that kept 'em going.
