Any given day of the week one can sign on to DU and see a veritable smorgasboard of disgusting crap being pulled on the citizens of the United States and/or the rest of the world by some of the most blatant low-lives to ever draw breath in the history of the human race. Every day we see excuses and licensed capitulation on the part of people who should damn well know better, who have been directly in the line of fire of some of the vicious and vile commentary by the RW pundits and other scumbags who have ruled the airwaves for entirely too long.
And every day we can sign on and see people expressing their disgust and disappointment that yet ANOTHER battle has been lost without even a shot being fired. One day it's waterboarding, the next it's Telcom immunity. Or so it seems. More or less. Take your pick.
If we should dare to stick a toe in the boiling pit of voracious lunacy that is today's GD-P and manage to escape with our flesh and minds intact, we stumble away with our eyes and hearts bleeding from the carnage that's become the whole purpose behind the forum's very existence.
In an attempt to find some sort of sanity, we go to the Greatest Page, there to find rants that tell us how everything is heading down the tubes at hyperspeed and we should simply get used to the idea that a Repug will be President and everything we're fighting for is just so much wasted time and effort. Wow--as if that doesn't make me feel like gargling ground glass or nailing my testicles to a block of wood.
What fun.
Ugh.
What, precisely, is DU offering us these days? I mean in terms of emotional or intellectual succor in the face of such trying times? Do we feel the sense of community that used to make this such an exceptional place to hang out, when even differences of opinion were just that, differences of opinion rather than evidence of evil intentions or exceptional brain damage?
Not so you'd notice.
It's getting harder and harder for me to come here. And even when I do, it's getting harder to stick around for any length of time. Gone are the days when I hit "Latest" every few minutes. It's almost always depressing, if not downright annoying, irritating, or aggravating.
My wife commented the other day that we might be coming to the time where I'll have to donate again to retain my star and I made mention of the fact that I'm not sure what I'm getting out of it any longer. Her response was that she couldn't see a time when I wasn't at DU.
She could be right. She usually is. But so what?
The negative outweighs the positive by something like a factor of a hundred and I'm not sure how much more I can take on top of everything else.
I just finished another novel while I've been off work. If you're interested in the details, check out my journal. If not. It may be a bit too positive in outlook and philosophy for most of the folks in these here parts these days anyway.
Bleh.
Double bleh.
I know I'm spending less and less time here. At this point I'm just wishing it wasn't three hours until my wife gets home. I want to get back to watching Dr. Who on DVD from Netflix. That's okay. If I really want instant escapism I can do what I have been doing--writing a little here and there in spurts interspersed with watching old episodes of Xena on the Netflix site.
Yes, it's pure escapism. But, then again, I think it's probably a more positive experience all the way around than trying to sort through some of the garbage I'm seeing here lately.
Hmmm. What a quandry. Watch Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor kick warlord and Olympian ass or watch DUers kick one another and any hope of a better tomorrow through the dirt and mud and blood on an almost constant basis...
Tough choice.
Well, not really.
Now which tab was that again? Ah, that's right. Netflix. Xena: Warrior Princess.
Enjoy. Try not to get any blood on the walls, will you? Mustn't leave too much damage for the next generation of people who happen to wander by in the hopes of making a difference. Maybe they can dust off the abandoned hope and bright visions stacked over in the corner and get them working again. Gawd knows it'll be long overdue by then.
