Mark Lynas presents his conclusions on the impact of climate change on the Earth in his book, Six Degrees: Our Future on a Hotter Planet. Mr. Lynas states that scientific studies show that global warming in the last century has pushed the Earth's temperatures up to unprecedented levels and that people must make changes now in order to avert disaster. Mr. Lynas discussed his book with Gene Karpinski, President of the League of Conservation Voters.

Linda Bilmes and Joseph Stiglitz talk about the cost of the Iraq War and the economic impact of the war on the U.S. economy and the world. They spoke at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco.

Erwin Hargrove, The Effective Presidency: Lessons on Leadership From John F. Kennedy to George W. Bush
Erwin Hargrove recommends that the American public focus on electing an effective president rather than a hero. In his book, Mr. Hargrove examines nine presidents, from John F. Kennedy to George W. Bush, and compares them according to contributions, mistakes, and differences. This event was hosted by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN.

William Link, Righteous Warrior: Jesse Helms and the Rise of Modern Conservatism
William Link recounts the political life of former Senator Jesse Helms (R-NC). Mr. Link relays that prior to his election to office in 1973, Jesse Helms was an opponent of the civil rights movement as well as a critic of the leftist politics of the day. During his tenure in the Senate, former Senator Helms was a leader of the conservative movement for nearly three decades. This event was hosted by Quail Ridge Books & Music in Raleigh, NC.

Liz Clarke, One Helluva Ride: How NASCAR Swept the Nation
Washington Post sportswriter Liz Clarke recounts the history of the stock car racing league NASCAR, and its social and political effect on the nation. Founded on dirt tracks in the South, NASCAR is now a billion dollar industry with the second-largest viewership in American sports. Ms. Clarke examines NASCAR's growth and its decision to curtail sponsorship by tobacco companies and the introduction of Japanese cars to attract a larger audience. The event was hosted by Olsson's Books and Records in Washington, DC.
