Brownback, Lieberman propose May 3-4 as Ten Commandments Weekend

Republican Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas and Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut have teamed up on a resolution that would declare the first weekend in May as "Ten Commandments Weekend."

“It is important for Americans to remember the importance the Ten Commandments have in our nation,” Brownback said. “The Ten Commandments are the cornerstone to the faith of millions of Americans of many faith traditions, and are a cornerstone to a fair and just society. We as a nation should take a weekend to reflect on the impact the Ten Commandments have had on the foundation of America’s national life.”

8. About that shalt not lie:
January 8, 2006

Brownback Lies About Abramoff Scandal

While on ABC’s “This Week” Senator Sam Brownback lied Sunday morning when he claimed Democrats have taken money from Jack Abramoff:

(Off-camera) How well did you know Jack Abramoff and did he ever ask you to take action on behalf of his clients?

SENATOR SAM BROWNBACK

He never asked me to take any action on behalf of any of his clients. I met him once over a breakfast or a lunch meeting and that was the only personal contact that I had with him. Obviously he was raising lots of money from Native American tribes and trying to move up fast and rapidly. I think he gave money to nearly 80 members in the United States Senate so he was spreading it amongst Republicans and Democrats. And I’m hopeful that the trail is followed and let’s pursue this and let’s pursue it aggressively so that we can show the people good, honest, clean government. (From Lexis Nexis Archives)

Brownback should come clean and admit no Democrats took money from Jack Abramoff. If what he said was not what he meant to say, he should learn to be more precise in his wording. As the statement stands, this is a lie.

usually the weekends before and after the holidays. Fine. The Christians can have their 10 Commandments Weekend, if the Pagans are allowed to go out and, um, fertilize the fields.

With the amount of lying they both do, and the amount of killing they both endorse, I can't imagine either sees this as anything more than red meat for the people who are stupid enough to still support them.

They can't possibly believe this country or it's laws are founded on the ten commandments. I just can't believe they're that ignorant.

22. Why dont they try promoting the Ten AMENDMENTS first?
You know, the Constitution, that sacred document that they were sworn to uphold, then forgot about? Why dont those assholes try promoting the bill of rights instead of a list that they clearly cant seem to remember (especially the parts about not stealing, lying, worshiping false gods, killing, etc.)

25. 10
I never cease to marvel at these fundamentalists who fail to understand that the Old Testament laws do not apply to Christians. They need to pull their heads out of Genesis and take a look at Paul. Not to mention, the Decalogue can be picked apart with no effort at all. For example:

"Thou shalt not kill." Really? What about animals? Plant life? Does that mean we should starve? What about in self-defense, or to save the life of an innocent person?

"Thou shalt not steal." Really? Not even to feed a starving child? Not to acquire a secret that might save the lives of thousands?

"Thou shalt not covet..." Really? Since when is desire a volitional act?

And so on.

The Judaeo/Christian tradition is an evolving one, and these rules come from a very primitive period in Jewish history. The idea that they can be universally and eternally applied is ludicrous.

What Lieberman and Brownback are up to is trying to reinforce the alliance between Israel and fundamentalist Christians; an unholy alliance if there ever was one, since said fundies only support Israel because they think it will bring about the end of the world!

You know, love your enemy more than yourself, take off all of your belongings and give it to the poor then follow him,
be kind to the least among us, blessed are the little children, turn the other cheek etc., etc. etc.

The 'blessed children' are being slaughtered and call collateral damage by the Bush criminals,
the poor are taxed more than the rich via oil prices and the IRS, evangelists are making millions off of the backs of the
elderly.

Revenge is mine saith the Lord. :dem:

43. Here are their Ten Commandments..
(Actually this was written about Victorian British values; but could equally apply to the American Republican sort):

THE LATEST DECALOGUE by Arthur Hugh Clough

Thou shalt have one God only; who
Would be at the expense of two?

No graven images may be
Worshipp'd, except the currency.

Swear not at all; for, for thy curse
Thine enemy is none the worse.

At church on Sunday to attend
Will serve to keep the world thy friend.

Honour thy parents; that is, all
From whom advancement may befall.

Thou shalt not kill; but need'st not strive
Officiously to keep alive.

Do not adultery commit;
Advantage rarely comes of it.

Thou shalt not steal; an empty feat,
When it's so lucrative to cheat.

Bear not false witness; let the lie
Have time on its own wings to fly.

Thou shalt not covet; but tradition
Approves all forms of competition.
