Who Is Rev. Moon? 'Sex Lord,' 'Messiah,' Publisher of the Washington Times

"True Father" to some, madman to others, Sun Myung Moon is one of the strangest and least scrutinized figures in the conservative media world.

By John Gorenfeld, PoliPoint Press. Posted March 15, 2008.

The following is an adapted excerpt from John Gorenfeld's "Bad Moon Rising: How Reverend Moon Created the Washington Times, Seduced the Religious Right, and Built an American Kingdom" (Polipoint Press, 2008). The video at the right is from a 1997 Washington Times party where Moon said he founded the newspaper to save the world. In it, he also demands that his employees rid the world of "free sex," meaning sexual intercourse beyond the purifying influence of his mass weddings.

One chilly Tuesday evening, strange things were afoot on Capitol Hill. The U.S. Senate was hosting a ceremony at the request of a wealthy, elderly newspaper publisher who wanted official recognition as a majestic, divine visitor to Washington. The Dirksen Senate Office Building made for an unlikely temple: a formidable seven-story block of white marble, looming on a street corner diagonally across from the Capitol Dome, its marble pediment is inscribed, "THE SENATE IS THE LIVING SYMBOL OF OUR UNION OF STATES."

On March 23, 2004, U.S. lawmakers were filmed here in a conference room, paying tribute to the enigmatic Reverend Sun Myung Moon, then eighty-four, and his wife, Hak Ja, sixty-four.

As the cameras rolled, two congressmen presented the Koreans with matching royal costumes. Wearing the burgundy robes and shining crowns, which crested into jagged golden pinnacles, the married couple smiled and waved for the cameras.

Who was this self-proclaimed monarch? In the 1970s, the evening news had presented Moon, the ranting, middle-aged business tycoon who wore flowing robes on special occasions, as Korea's answer to L. Ron Hubbard, someone for college students to avoid, luring thousands of young Americans into a cult in which they sold carnations on the street and married spouses he chose for them. But the media had moved on to other nightmares, leaving Moon, forgotten, to reinvent himself. Now time had wizened him into an elderly patriarch, wearing an ashen face for his coronation. An orange Senate VIP name tag remained pinned to his gray suit, peeking out from between rows of curly gold filigree, as he stood on stage at the head of a red carpet.

Will we see the author of this important new book interviewed on Good Morning America?

Or is that just a Mickey Mouse Fantasyland thirst for real reporting and real information from the corrupted US media?

3. I can't stand the guy
Living in the metro area, I lose respect for anybody I know who reads that rag the Washington Times. Unfortunately, my stepdad likes it but my mom likes the Post so they get both. When I house sit for them, I make sure I put the Times in the recycle bin without even looking at it...

4. one of the most interesting aspects of the "Moonies" is that they control . . .
literally thousands of small businesses throughout the U.S. and across the globe . . . I can't seem to find the list amongst my bookmarks, but I do recall that it was really long . . .

there's another resource that covers the Moon phenomenon in some detail at this website -- 16 parts researched and written by Robert Parry . . .

and then there's this, from CNN on February 29, 2008 . . .

Rev. Moon-allied group hosts Bush brother in Paraguay

http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/americas/02/29/paraguay.neil.bush.ap/

ASUNCION, Paraguay (AP) -- Neil Bush, younger brother of President Bush, called on Paraguay's president as the guest of a business federation founded by the Rev. Sun Myung Moon.

A presidential press office source, who spoke on condition of not being named, confirmed the younger Bush met President Nicanor Duarte on Thursday along with a delegation from the Universal Peace Federation, a group associated with Moon.

Duarte had no statement on the meeting.

Antonio Betancourt, a spokesman for the federation, said that Bush visited Duarte and later met with an opposition congressional leader, Sen. Miguel Abdon Saguier, and that both expressed interest in the Bush family and discussed local matters.

Hail To The Moon King

The deeply weird coronation of Rev. Sun Myung Moon in a Senate office building -- crown, robes, the works -- is no longer one of Washington's best-kept secrets.

By John Gorenfeld

Jun 21, 2004 | You probably imagine your congressman hard at work in the Capitol debating legislation, making laws -- you know, governing. But your newspaper probably didn't tell you that one night in March, members of Congress hosted a crowning ritual for an ex-convict and multibillionaire who dressed up in maroon robes and declared himself the Second Coming.

On March 23, the Dirksen Senate Office Building was the scene of a coronation ceremony for Rev. Sun Myung Moon, owner of the conservative Washington Times newspaper and UPI wire service, who was given a bejeweled crown by Rep. Danny K. Davis, D-Ill. Afterward, Moon told his bipartisan audience of Washington power players he would save everyone on Earth as he had saved the souls of Hitler and Stalin -- the murderous dictators had been born again through him, he said. In a vision, Moon said the reformed Hitler and Stalin vouched for him, calling him "none other than humanity's Savior, Messiah, Returning Lord and True Parent."

To many observers, this bizarre scene would have looked like the apocalypse as depicted in "Left Behind" novels. Moon, 84, the benefactor of conservative foundations like the American Family Coalition -- who served time in the 1980s for tax fraud and conspiracy to obstruct justice -- has views somewhere to the right of the Taliban's Mullah Omar. Moon preaches that gays are "dung-eating dogs," Jews brought on the Holocaust by betraying Jesus, and the U.S. Constitution should be scrapped in favor of a system he calls "Godism" -- with him in charge. The man crowned "King of Peace" by congressmen once said, according to sermons reprinted in his church's Unification News: "Suppose I were to hit you with the baseball bat to stop you, bloodying your ear and breaking a bone or two, yet still you insisted on doing more work for Father."

10. His influence on RW politics is many more times what is described here
It is so pervasive that Moon is able to keep it well shielded from common knowledge by his control of the media. I mean if evangelicals even knew of his connections to Falwall and Liberty University, and that he owns a university,an arms manufacturer, and literally thousands of businesses AND that he was annointed GOD in a federal building, and realize their connections to him - they would be a little more than alarmed. But then again the story is a little too sinister to be believed so probably will never happen. But the proof is most certainly there.
