16. When I came here it seemed gray and parochial
and I missed the USA terribly. Now, I can't think of anywhere I'd rather live than here.

21. I'd love to live in T.O., despite all those monstrous condos going up everywhere......
.... Luckily, I'm close enough to be a frequent visitor.

22. That may be the way to get the best of it.
It's so big now it's become one of those "nice place to visit but I wouldn't wanna live there" cities, maybe. But I love it, as messy and haphazard as all this growth has been. I got to photograph the mayor at an event last week, and was hard-pressed not to ask him, "Now, what about this?" But they don't speak Southern up here.

2. ..
Now that looks like an awesome rally to attend!

Great weather, a righteous cause, and knowing what you're doing is just the right thing to do.

Sal-Lut, Toronto!

7. Welcome to DU, Anexio
I'm a Floridian safely transplanted to Toronto. I hate the weather, but the city rocks & there are lots of American expats here.

10. Thanks so much, Salmon!
It was a gorgeous day. Even the cops were pretty cheery today. Usually these things are held in front of the US Consulate (can't wait to head there to get my passport renewed - I'm sure the CIA has a nice little collection of photos of me in angry crowds outside over the course of the Bush years). Today's event was more picturesquely uptown, in the area I first lived in when I moved here. Still my favorite part of a remarkable city.

11. These are great, JeffR
We're having a march here on Saturday so I'll be there with camera in hand. I think there is also a vigil on Wednesday that I'm going to try to attend. I'll be caring for Sebastian that day :) so I might not be able to make it.

Yesterday, we saw a lone protestor, dressed as an Abu Ghraib prisoner -- posed with hood and wires as in that infamous photo -- standing silent on one of the busiest corners in Anchorage. It was such a stark reminder. I didn't have the camera, but the image is emblazoned in my brain. It's so sad what our country has become.

13. God. I can only admire that protester. That's symbolism that cuts deep.
Best sign I saw today: "Bush hijacked 911 and crashed it into Iraq."

And Sebastian could charm the most hard-assed cops!:)

It was a benevolent late-winter day. You could feel the warmth of the sun on your back, despite the huge, dirty snowbanks everywhere. It's that time of year here when an old Southern boy gets real homesick. But it felt good to march in a noisy crowd. Couple of other expat DUers I was hoping to see today, but it was a big crowd, so I missed them.

but I hear the new dinosaur gallery inside is spectacular. So I'll reserve judgment until I get to see it.

A bit after that I noticed that JeffR was the photographer. For all those who want to document public demos and such like this one, look carefully at these photos. They tell a lot more than a bunch of ordinary snapshots of the sort I might manage. And more truth.

(Edit to add) If you wonder what I am talking about in terms of the art involved in creating compelling photos, look here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=280x41238

That's just so generous. Your handling of a camera has taught me a lot. Maybe some of that inspirational example had sunk in at last.
