With the country teetering on the brink of a recession, the economy leads this Sunday’s
morning talk shows, with Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson making the rounds.
Doing a three-peat — appearing on ABC’s “This Week,” CNN’s “Late Edition” and “Fox News
Sunday” — the secretary will discuss the falling dollar, rising oil prices and the general
economic unease gripping the country.
ABC also features an interview with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), fresh off an
impressive week for House Democrats, who pushed through an ethics reform bill, a budget
blueprint and an update of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.Host George Stephanopoulos also convenes a political roundtable with The Washington Post’s
Ruth Marcus, Time magazine's Mark Halperin and ABC analysts Donna Brazile and George Will.
After Paulson’s appearance, CNN stays on the economy, interviewing Gene Sperling, who was
a top economic adviser in the Clinton White House.
Host Wolf Blitzer also interviews Douglas Holtz-Eakin, an adviser to the all-but-certain
Republican presidential nominee, Arizona Sen. John McCain.
Finally, CNN features a Democratic faceoff between Sens. Dianne Feinstein of California,
a Hillary Rodham Clinton supporter, and Patrick Leahy of Vermont, who supports Barack Obama.
“Fox News Sunday” follows its Paulson interview with a pair of Democratic economic heavy
weights – New York Sen. Charles Schumer, head of the Joint Economic Committee, and Connecticut
Sen. Chris Dodd, chairman of the Senate Banking Committee.
Will they both play nice on Fox? Or will they go after President Bush’s economic policies?
Finally, host Chris Wallace sits down with White House press secretary Dana Perino, the "Fox
power player of the week.”
And though the April 22 Pennsylvania presidential primary is still weeks away, plenty of Clinton
and Obama surrogates will be on the shows Sunday, hoping to push their candidates over the edge
in this critical race.
On NBC’s “Meet the Press,” former New Jersey Sen. Bill Bradley, an Obama supporter,
squares off against Rep. Nita Lowey (D-N.Y), a Clinton backer.
Host Tim Russert also leads a roundtable on the week’s politics with The Washington Post's
David Broder, NBC's David Gregory and PBS's Michele Norris.
CBS’s “Face the Nation” also has a surrogate faceoff, featuring Massachusetts Gov. Deval
Patrick, who has lent his support — and sometimes his prose — to the Obama campaign and
former Clinton White House chief of staff Leon Panetta, who supports Clinton.New York Times columnist David Brooks also appears on CBS.
And with the five-year anniversary of the Iraq war passing this week, C-SPAN’s “Newsmakers”
features an interview with Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island, one of the Democrats’ leading voices
on the war. He’ll face questions from John Mulligan of the Providence Journal and Jim Michaels
of USA Today.
Finally, Bloomberg’s “Political Capital” weighs in on the controversial resignation of New York
Gov. Elliot Spitzer, as host Al Hunt chats with Spitzer’s Democratic predecessor, Mario Cuomo.
