Does anyone else find themselves retreating into different times these days?

I was just sitting here reading my daily tons of newspapers, magazines & blogs and was feeling increasingly overwhelmed by the state of our world. The news was on in the background and I just couldn't take it anymore. I grabbed my handy-dandy remote and found old "I Love Lucy" reruns, which I quickly switched to. Better. I realize that I do that a lot lately as the feeling of impending doom encroaches. I realize that the 50's and other decades weren't the good old times for way too many Americans, but for me it's a return to childhood & simpler times, times when what I cared most about was having a sleepover with my best friend, playing with my dog, getting my homework over with so I could go out and play, how many days I had to wait for my birthday and Christmas, and when I'd next see my beloved grandmother. I increasingly miss the feeling of safety, security & imperviousness I felt then. I miss the innocence of childhood and I want it back! :scared: :cry:

1. Might I suggest you tune to "The Twilight Zone" rather than "I Love Lucy"

More relevance. But to answer your question, yes. I like to watch the old shows not for their content but to look at the background scenes, to see the little hints that bring back memories of what it was really like back then.

14. A piece of advice that I often forget.

You know damn well there is nothing, absolutly nothing, that can say, think, or do, that will change any of this.

Lay off the news programs, they are all negative and insane. 95% of the crap they talk about never comes to pass, and the bottom line is you know about as much about all of this as the talking heads do. They just get paid to spout out their bull shit opinions and you don;t, that's the only difference.

20. You're right and I've done that for the most part lately.....

though I occasionally fall back into old habits. I did media monitoring for quite awhile and got used to monitoring what was being said on various programs. I occasionally turn on CNN or MSNBC while I'm feeding the dogs or something, and I totally regret it -- once they're eating, I grab the remote and turn the damn thing off.

My first set of The Avengers arrived yesterday, and I've spent most of my time looking at circa 1965 B&W television -- in between watching Popeye (circa 1940's, with BLUTO not BRUTUS, thank you very much!) and listening to Son of Schmilsson (circa 1970's). As it's slowly setting in that my yesterdays probably far outnumber my tomorrows, I'm starting to realize what my parents saw in Guy Lombardo and Rudy Vallee.

Although Rudy Vallee never crooned, "I sang my balls off for you baby..."

18. I retreated for a few moments into my mother's halcyon days

We were both watching a Glenn Miller show on PBS. I was thinking how it took me a long time to appreciate Big Band music because, when I was young, that was my parent's music and anything my parents liked was old and irrelevant (my thinking then). It wasn't until I was in my late 30s and heard a tape of Goodman or Miller that I realized there was some value to my parents' music.

but one never knows. I also find myself listening to more old music and I've always loved classical, which has survived through centuries. That gives me a peaceful sense of things surviving despite screwed up humans doing their best to screw up the world.
