9. I was just thinking about what could be. Let me say something about Canada
This won't mean much to anyone I guess but it caught my eye about 2 years ago. By our standards the prisons in Canada are resorts but the recidivism rate for people who have been jailed in Canada is next to nothing. That says something about a people, something very good.

21. Having moved from the US
To Canada I could write a book on some of the many things they do better here - but I don't think anyone outside Canada would read it - or care and most of those who did would take it as gloating (especially on the right).

It is not perfect, but I think the one thing I can say while keeping this brief is that it tries to be. It's a cliche to say that 'Canadians don't know what they are, only what they are not' but there is a constant striving to be better - as a nation, to fix things that are wrong and do it in a measured, sustainable and humanitarian fashion. The vast majority of Canadians are anti-war (but pro international aid), anti-poverty, pro-environment, anti-crime (but very much in favour of 2nd chances), pro-immigration (56% of my city was born outside Canada), pro-choice, pro-Health Care, EXTREMELY pro human/civil rights, and pro-education beyond that there are differences of opinion but any successful politician in Canada has to at least appear to be all those things.

I'd say it's at least significant. The peeps there are mostly cool too.

Why does the immigration application require one to account for every month of one's life?

23. One more thing about Canada
That shocked me when I found out (having moved here from the States):

The military is entirely voluntary. Not only do you volunteer for the Military, but you can literally opt-out of any mission you don't feel comfortable about - in other words if you don't believe in the mission, or don't think it will work etc., you can just say no and they'll find you something else to do.

Also, at least at one point they reported, on our mission to Afghanistan the average age was 26, they averaged 7 years of training prior to the mission, and for about 2/3rds this wasn't their first mission (Rwanda, Somalia, Yugoslavia, Haiti, etc.,).

Canada is a much more civilized country than ours in reality. They don't dump their people off without health insurance!

31. I love Canada. It's their fish and game officers I have a problem with!
Edited on Sun Mar-16-08 05:49 PM by B Calm
First fishing trip into Canada, and my wife and I got a $340.00 fine because we were fishing in a protected area. The protected area was open fishing the next day. No fish in the boat, and the bastards still fined us. The protected area was just a small bay on huge body of water. No signs what-so-ever to warn the fishermen that it was a protected area.
