The market will come back up. May take longer, and that's no solace to people who for whatever reason would need to sell now at a loss. I won't enjoy seeing the total number in my stock portfolio go down as it has been doing, but I'd feel worse if I needed the cash now.

We've seen that happen a lot in the past few years -- the overseas markets crash, and 12 hours later, American traders clean up the mess and make a tidy profit.

In the long run, of course, we have real trouble. But for today, a lot of money might be made. (OTOH, I won't be the one making it.)

I could just as easily be wrong, but here on DU, contrarian thinking is correct a lot more often than not.

THe key with any market at any time is to have serious diversity. Yes today the Dow could go down 3oo, 400 or even 500 points. The Nasdaq could decrease 100 and S&P 50 or 60. It could be a rough day. A mix of US stocks, foreign stocks, bonds, cash, gold/platinum, etc. i the best way to go.

Even if we had a downturn for a few years at some point it will fluctuate back up. Dollar cost-averaging is the way any portfolio makes money. Buy cheap. Etc.
