Amy Goodman....."Not even mainstream media anymore."
C-Span`s rerun of Amy Goodman`s participation in the Winter Soldier event just about saved my sanity this morning. I couldn`t take one more second of the shockingly shallow Joe Scarborough, MSNBC`s morning television star. Scarborough represents all that`s best in American tv stardom. He`s a Republican and he`s in favor of torture.

Back to Amy. She talked about the ("not even mainstream") media`s culpability in the runup to the Iraq War. In part:

"Airwaves are a national treasure."
"Lies take lives."
"Small group of pundits knew so little about so much."
"These discussions determine who lives and who dies."

Amy begged people to get involved, "shore up" independent media, challenge the FCC, be media activists, be media literate.

I simply can not fathom how so many Americans can sit idly by as George Bush and his criminal sidekicks continue the ruination of Iraq, Afghanistan and the United States.

1. There's nothing "mainstream" about it. It's Corporate Media...
...with a singular profit-making agenda. And that's the problem.

2. Right. That was one of Goodman`s points.
We can`t even call them "mainstream" anymore.

14. I set out about 5 years ago to devise a replacement term........
Edited on Tue Mar-18-08 10:35 AM by FredStembottom
..... for "mainstream media". One that has a description of what is wrong right inside the term itself - while still being just as short and snappy. I came up with:

The Captive Media.

They are: Bought. Held. Infiltrated. Compromised. Agenda driven. Willfully dishonest. Totally un-free and un-American....the term Captive Media conveys a sense of the problem each time you use it.

6. Lessee. George crashes our economy.
Nobody has faith in our money, our stocks, our bonds. Corporate media has to drop ad rates. Loses money.

Yes, quite a profit-making agenda.

Really, sometimes people on DU make no sense at all.

8. So the king slaughtered the goose to grab the golden eggs. It's still greed.

3. Because the mass media make sure that the average American
(trained from childhood to avoid and disdain intellectual endeavors) believes that the only important news is celebrity scandals and that the highest form of entertainment is "reality" TV.

If you've ever read Alduous Huxley's Brave New World, you'll understand what I mean when I say that the corporate media are doing their darndest to turn the American people into a nation of Epsilons. A lot of them are there already, as far as I can tell.

4. People haven't sat by
Just on the FCC issue, people showed up in record numbers regarding consolidation and the poor news. The FCC simply ignored what was said and promulgated its regs, ignoring the public.
If this election doesn't take care of things, I wouldn't be surprised if people started taking to the streets.

7. how so many sit idly by?
There's a real anti-intellectual, feel-good
bias among many Americans.. particularly
those in the South and other red states.

The rich elites like to foster this trend
through control of the media and the education
system.

Just look at the way institutions and schools
are being undermined in favor of testing and
privatization.

Then look at the way people are manipulated
towards consumerism and certain tv shows that
contain the underlying message of white-right
and black-wrong (or evil).

Thus, through fear and hate and smug complacency
about our rightness, we fall victim to the myth
of our own superiority without ever being able to
look at our shadow much less deal with it.

9. Democracy NOW! and Amy Goodman....
is a part of our daily ritual.

Unfortunately, we have to suscribe to "The Dish" in order to view her show on Free Speech TV.
That's $85/month feeding the Telecom Indusrty. :(

16. People Think They Cannot Stop It
I contend the reason people do not do that much is because they think the cannot do anything to stop what is happening. Also, I contend many people do not know what they can do to stop these things. I contend it is like Johh Maher's song "Waiting on the World to Change". It is not that people do not care it is just they do not think they can change things. To some degree I think the Democratic Party needs to find a way to inform people of what they themselves can do to change things.
