3. t went up and then came down a wee bit here in south Texas.
Best price is about $3.10 a gallon. Diesel is awful, though, about 45 cents more.

7. My sister lives up in Seattle. She apparently lives in the inner-core of the city b/c she has no car
Edited on Tue Mar-18-08 01:45 PM by Selatius
I asked her how she gets around, and she says she takes the city transit buses or walks. I see why: gas prices and car insurance premiums add up.

I'm lucky out here in Mississippi to be paying 3.20 compared to anything higher, but folks who rely on mass transit--I wonder if they're the luckiest of all if their way of life can fit it in.

17. Ever try to ride a bike in Seattle?
It's cold.

It rains a lot.

And it's too damn hilly.

Or so I've heard.

I live in relatively sunny and temperate NC.

I love riding my bike to work, except for all the damn cars and SUVs I have to dodge of course.

30. Maybe somewhat bicycle friendly- but a mass transit nightmare
Seattle has really screwed itself over the past 20 years in that regard, and the time is coming soon where they're really going to pay for their lack of planning and foresight.

29. Aerorider - fully enclosed, electrically assisted bicycle (actually a tricycle)
Edited on Wed Mar-19-08 08:42 PM by aint_no_life_nowhere
I don't know what they cost, but they might be a tad expensive:

"...Aerorider is an urban commuting solution that cheats wind, rain and traffic to provide a low-cost, environmentally friendly mode of transport. When using the electric motor to assist pedalling, the single-person Aerorider can achieve speeds of 45 kmh without raising a sweat and the aerodynamic design delivers a drag coefficient around one tenth that of a standard bicycle.

Primarily for commuters who would normally leave their bicycle at home in wet and cold conditions, the Aerorider includes ample luggage space within the composite frame. Steering is controlled with a joystick and an onboard computer provides real-time information on speed and distance covered as well as anti-theft protection.

The narrow shape and light weight of the Aerorider make it simple to handle and suitable for use in bicycle lanes. In comparison to a car it causes minimal emission, it's easy to park and reduces traffic noise. ..."

Here's another manufacturer, of something called the go-one. It also offers the feature of assistance in pedalling from an electric motor. If your battery runs low, just park it and pedal it awhile to recharge your battery and replenish your power.

These go for about $11,000 (U.S.). But you never will need gas or oil again and you don't need to purchase auto insurance. And I'll bet that if a lot of people turned to this type of transportation, the cost of mass-produced electrically-assisted, enclosed tricycles would decrease dramatically.

23. We live in Duvall
We've significantly cut back on car trips. At the same time, the only people who ride a bike on our rural, dangerous roads are those who don't have much regard for health or safety.

26. Well, these people who ride a bike may at least have some regard for health...
...insofar as they may well not want to put harmful pollutants into the air that people breathe. Of course, I must be careful not to presume that I can read others' minds, just as you too must not presume that any cyclists you see nearby necessarily regard where they happen to bicycle as being unsafe.

31. Hey, Herman,
I see by your profile that you don't even live in the Seattle area. Before you tell those of us who travel the roads here how we should be behaving, why not take your own advice and work on those in your area?

Again, we live thirty miles from Seattle in a rural area. It was what we could afford. Anyone who doesn't believe that country roads that are major throughways for eighteen-wheelers, with little discernible shoulder, and a 55 MPH speed limit are most likely unsafe to bike on a daily basis are kidding themselves.

a friendly bicycle commuter, who actually lives in Seattle, not thirty miles away from it. http://www.poplarware.com/personal/bicycle.html

And in addition to the websites of my previous post, here's yet another website, put out by the Cascade Bicycle Club Education Foundation on just how possible it is to bicycle in the Seattle area.

http://www.cbcef.org/commute.html

A direct quote from this Seattle-based organization: "Commute by bicycle! It's easy!"

and how about just one more quote from this website:

"Cascade Bicycle Club, The Seattle Bicycle Advisory Board, the city of Seattle, and King County Metro strongly encourage you to drive your bike instead of your car. Use your bicycle to commute to work, shop, or run errands--you'll be part of a transportation solution that reduces pollution, traffic congestion and dependence on imported energy."

Enjoy the websites!

Edited on Wed Mar-19-08 05:31 PM by TahitiNut
http://www.seattlegasprices.com/

According to GasBuddy reports, you actually have to look hard to find a high price of $3.74/gallon.

In my neighborhood, I dan easily get gas for $3.25/gallon ... but if I try, I can probably pay a lot more.

I also told DH that we'll have to get to the Costco pumps when they open, so we spend a minimum of time burning gas while waiting in line.

27. If Bernanke keeps cutting these interest rates, further ...
... devaluating the dollar, it's going to get worse. They're trying to bail out these hustlers on Wall Street who've screwed up the financial sector with their abstract shenanigans, and it's going to hurt the rest of us for a long time. Oil inventories are actually up, and demand is dropping (for oil), so this all comes down to the comparative worthlessness of our currency.
