7. Most of the paper profits of the last few years aren't safe
but the original investment my dad made back in the 60s and 70s certainly is. Plus, it's all producing the income I live on.

The rest of it is just numbers on a page, numbers I expect to trend downward for the next several years, although not as far down as the market as a whole. I've been as careful as possible about what I've kept and what I've dumped and was never bitten by the high risk, high return bug.

I was shocked when I inherited that his portfolio would be the envy of most socially responsible funds: no alcohol, tobacco or military stocks.

I suppose he knew I'd dump them if he'd had them.
