This could happen in America (Egypt bread shortages cause riots )
http://feeds.bignewsnetwork.com/?sid=338546

Bread shortages in Egypt have prompted President Hosni Mubarak to increase the production and distribution of bread.

Rising prices and alleged corruption have sparked recent clashes at bakeries in poorer neighbourhoods, leading to several deaths.

Because the army and interior ministry control numerous bakeries, normally used to supply bread for troops and police, Mr Mubarak has insisted that some of the supplies should be provided to the public.

2. Most Americans can not fathom such shortages (we have a short memory)
there have been no shortages or rationing in nearly 30 years. I have no idea how the public would take to such shortages.

6. I saw a map with OUR wheat belt moved all the way up to Canada.
The climate will affect our crops. The violent weather will affect our crops. We who worry about getting the latest iPhone or Blackberry are going to have to worry about food.

9. That's not all. I had a chat with people in a local Chinese
restaurant who said the price of soy oil is through the roof.

There are multiple speculative bubbles happening in commodities right now, bubbles created by people who have fled the stock market for the time being. The people who got in first will make a killing. The people who didn't will be killed.

Everybody's waiting to see how low the Dow can go.

10. Thanx for the link, CulR
I was wondering what on earth was going on with the price of wheat. Did some searching on the web, but couldn't find anything. Your article tells the story.

Re: wheat. I've also read that we don't have any wheat right now (stored up). Is this possible? If this is true, then the best thing to do is to hoard the stuff.
Right now, before it explodes in price.

7. i don't eat bread...i'm allergic to dietary starch.
but- as a hunter-gatherer, it isn't a natural part of the human diet, anyway.

8. Poor folks in Egypt have heavily subsidized bread
as part of their own social welfare system. When those prices are forced up, people start to go hungry. Plus, there's also downward pressure on the amount offered at the subsidized price.

Here, the sky is the limit on store bread, so we still have an adequate supply for anyone who is willing to pay those prices.

Baking your own bread is not rocket science if you have an oven. Poor people in Egypt don't. When the supply goes down and the price shoots up, they are in serious trouble.
