Imagine that someone comes to your house seeking shelter. You have reason to trust the person, because of distant family connections or proffered references, but things start going badly.

They start running up bills on your credit card, wreck the car, burn down the garage while making methamphetamine, and you can't do anything about it because this person has moved his friends into the house and is keeping your children hostage and threatens to harm them if anyone complains to the police. Investigators that come to the door asking why the children have stopped coming to school get a plausible story about your moving with your kids to another state for a better job.

Thinking things can't get worse, you acquiesce to living the life of a slave in hopes of saving your children. But things do get worse. The children are turned out as prostitutes and you are subjected to routine torture,
rape and humiliation. There it stands.
