i read a post this morning, "maybe i'm a republican." and it made a point i found much to disagree with. i took a shower. i sat down to respond. i wrote my response, and - voila! - the thread was locked.
so here's my response, because i'm going to be late to work because of the time i spent writing it:
maybe you are a republican
I can see the need to stay around in Iraq for a while. Can you imagine what would happen to our economy if there was no access to that oil with $100+/bbl prices on the commodities markets?
does our dependence on foreign oil actually give us the right to invade a sovereign nation, trash its infrastructure, kill its civilians, and turn millions of its citizens out of their homes? if our dependence on foreign oil is reason enough to do all that, i think it's time we started investing in alternative energy.
think of what we could do in this country if just 1% of 1/10th of the money being squandered on war profiteers was invested here at home. every kid in this country with the intellectual capacity to do so could earn an advanced degree. everyone could have a home, and food. we could begin to actually help the iraqis clean up after the mess we have stuck them with. from here, with money. not over there, with bullets and bombs.
if our need for oil justifies the occupations then i guess you're okay with nuking iran. and after that i suppose we'll have to take over all the arab states that have oil reserves, because we need the oil. how can you actually justify the invasion and occupation of iraq on the basis of oil? that does sound very republican to me.
