Conyers: 'If Bush Goes to Iran, He Should Be Impeached'

Posted by Jane Hamsher, Firedoglake at 9:20 AM on March 18, 2008.

Rep. John Conyers weighs in on Iran and FISA at the Take Back America conference in Washington DC.

John Conyers just finshed up a panel with John Cole and Christy Hardin Smith at Take Back America with words that were heartening to everyone made just a wee bit uneasy by the recent retirement of Admiral Fallon and the implications it might have for war with Iran:

"If Bush Goes Into Iran, He Should Be Impeached," said Conyers.

Conyers also said that with regard to FISA, the House was going into conference with the Senate. That the Senate wanted to give retroactive immunity to the telecoms, and that the House is saying "let a judge decide." But he also made the point that it wasn't just the Republicans who were the problem:

"There were about seventeen Democratic senators that bought into that business. We need to straighten them out," he said.

Christy also noted that if the White House said the telecoms did nothing wrong, they certainly issued some indemnification letters -- and that the legal departments at the telecoms would never have signed off without them.

So where are they?

If Bush attacks Iran, he'll do it under the cover of a national emergency.

Guess what Conyers? He can suspend Congress indefinitely at that point.

16. Conyers has the power to begin Impeachment hearings now
One million innocent dead Iraqis are not enough for him?
If they attack Iran, it is too late, obviously!!

We were given the perfect opportunity to impeach Bush when he admitted to illegal wiretapping on national TV.
Conyers promised to begin Impeachment hearings when the Dems won in 2006.
He has stated that Pelosi cannot and is not stopping him.
He is the one responsible for blocking Impeachment right now.
He is an enabler and precisely the type of person we want to take American back from.

I went to a townhall with mine recently, and gave him my impeachment materials (again) and he gestured at them and allowed as to how bad and even illegal things had been done but "procedure must be followed." I said "WELL FOLLOW IT ALREADY"!

22. It's about power, not human life. Hitting Iran would seriously hurt American power.
So necessarily the reaction to such a conflict would be to stop Bush or try to stop him. Better to kill a million Iraqis than sacrifice entirely American power with a war against Iran. That's realpolitik in action.

I find it disgusting, honestly.

Edited on Tue Mar-18-08 02:41 PM by MartyL
My gawd that book makes me cry! How far we have fallen...our congressmen were an entirely different breed, actually noble public servants for the most part.

Back in the day, the People would not have allowed this to continue. If a Congressperson was this corrupt they would have confronted them and beat the crap out of them. Maybe a little fear was a good thing. Now they shit in our faces and expect us to like it.

37. Impeachment wouldn't remove them
There is no way that they'd get the 67 votes in the senate. Impeachment should still happen so a serious investigation into Bush's crimes can be started and to send a message, but it won't remove them from office.

Conyers supported impeachment until the dems won the house in 2006, then he changed his mind.

It is not about him. That's what our Congress doesn't get anymore. They have a job. They swore an oath to uphold the Constitution. I don't give a damn if they think they will look bad, Fox will call them names, Cheney will be mean, someone might not like them. They are so selfish and immature. Have some integrity for GOD's sake!!

The war in Iraq has killed over one million Iraqis. The same people go on and on about the Jewish Holocaust. WE killed ONE MILLION IRAQIS!!! For Greed- and pretend we are doing them a favor. It is SICK!!! This is one sick country. If they will not Impeach, we need to throw every one of them out of office. Conyers is running unopposed. He acts like an arrogant prick because he has no fear of being thrown out of office.

43. true
It was also unlikely that in the 1950s a sheriff in a white southern town would prosecute someone who committed violence against blacks. But that doesn't make it ok to not prosecute out of fear of cultural and political retribution. The dems won't do it, but that doesn't mean we can't point out how unprincipled and spineless they are.

44. we can't continue to fall for this type of foolishness
So he saw how popular he became with the left when he brought up impeachment. He knows that he and Pelosi aren't going to do a damn thing about Iraq, so they move the goal post so that they can dangle another piece of fish in front of us for another few years. I'M NOT TAKING THE BAIT!

Don't insult my intelligence, Mr. Conyers! I'd rather you just shut up about the entire thing. Honestly.

47. Wow! Can't you hear Dubya quaking in his boots!
This is simply pathetic.

Bush/Cheney have already committed numerous impeachable offenses. The House Democrats have the numbers to impeach and possibly STOP a war on Iran before it starts. Admittedly, they do not have the numbers in the Senate to convict--which requires a two thirds majority. However, impeachment is similar to an indictment and it would signal a resolve--to the world, to the U.S. military, to the corporate media, to the American public--that the Democratic Congress would no longer roll over for the criminal madness of King Dubya.

The Crawford Caligula is nearing the end of his 8 years of ruination and mass murder, and Conyers is threatening that a war on Iran would be grounds for impeachment? I can almost hear them shaking in fear down at the White House...once they stop their laughing.
