Russia and the US are firmly at odds over US influence in Eastern Europe.

Although the first day of talks between the two gave conciliatory signs that both sides could restore their relationship, US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice and her Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, have since given little hope of any change in the attitudes of the two countries

Russia remains firmly opposed to the planned installations in Poland and the Czech Republic which the US refuses to give up.

Nevertheless, an abundance of positive rhetoric from both sides has transformed into promises for further rounds of negotiations.

Sergei Lavrov said while "the US had confirmed its intention to build a missile defence site in Europe, it had approached Russia with important useful proposals."

1. If I were Russia

I would be acting as though I wanted to see the US build the missile defense system. The more the US spends on defense and war the more in decline our society will become. And this pipe dream is just the type of cash sink that will eventually bankrupt this country and push us over the brink into obscurity like the roman empire.

3. The missile defense shield concept is a complete hand-job.

Most of the major tests have had the target marked with a beacon to ensure success.
All we have to do is to convince our enemies to add a beacon to their missiles and we'll be protected.

5. Shoe on other foot... Condincompetence

1) The situation is reversed from the '80s arms race. Russia is pumped with oil revenue while the US Dollar is in free fall. WE are the ones that will go bankrupt in new arms race.

2) Unilaterally withdrawing from the ABM treaty and restarting Star Wars was what was occupying Bush and Condi while Richard Clarke was sending her half a dozen strident memos on Al Qaida. If our lasers are as focused as she preposterously claims she was, we've got no chance in hell. Thank good we have her on our side, what with her doctoral thesis of the rising threat of the USSR in the 21st century and all.
