We have 14 Army Bases built there...4 being super-bases.
There is the probability that at least 50,000 will be maintained to man those Army bases...for many many years to come.
We should be arguing not to completely pull everything out, but much more realistically, how to fight the forces of capitalism that keep us there vs the reality of trying to keep order.
The difference is approximately 50,000 troops at army bases vs. about 150,000+ and another 300,000 + contractors doing their "business" throughout the Iraqi infrastructure, hoping dearly to get in on the ground floor of some very lucrative business to come, whether it be pumping oil, running a power grid, or building skyscrapers.
This is an OCCUPATION to support contractors we have there, not to foster any less violence between the various tribes. Actually if they were all to kill each other these people would probably have no problem with. The real problem is maintaining order to the extent that the contractors can operate and have some reasonable expectation of keeping their "businesses" going.
Bottom line also being that we need to have them sign an agreement that we lease 63 of their 80 wells for the next 20 years.
Things are looking more and more grim from this vantage point. Contractors (Blackwater, etc) are taking over the job of soldiers. This environment has attracted some of our most dare devil risk takers. They are all in one place now....feeding on each others relentless desire to make money and put away a fortune in perhaps 10 years or less.
So....there will be many birthdays to come. It is, for all intents and purposes, another Korea in the making. But with a different flavor enhancer this time, a Las Vegas style dream of making money.
