3. You know, I could say something about the Clintons and China...
But because I'm in somewhat of a decent mood right now, I won't.

BTW, I've only had one cup of coffee, and it wasn't purchased at Wally-world.

:hangover:

4. A few months ago I had to take part in a Wal-Mart protest.
Mandatory for the job I had. It was pretty funny, and really pathetic. About 10 peoples showed up, stood around with candles, then one by one came up with an excuse to go inside and shop. "I have to go to the bathroom" was the most common. The favorite was the lady who didn't even try to hide it, she just walked up to us, said "I'm here for you", then went inside to shop. I bumped into her on line when I was done shopping. At least I had the decency to wait until the protest was over before I went inside.

21. There are a lot of us who
have to shop at Walmart because we don't have any extra money to do so. I do try to go to Target (which is actually closer) as much as possible, picking up (when I can afford it) as many deeply discounted items as I can, but Walmart gives me a chance to get more than I usually do elsewhere.

I have my share of complaints in general about the whole Walmart conglomerate, but I can't shrug them off because I can't afford to.

When I win the lottery, I'll stop shopping there. Til then, I can't dis them.

7. You need a wider brush...
Target Corp aims to double procurement

Top US retailer Target Corporation, which set up a sourcing centre in Shenzhen in September, said its procurement from the mainland is expected to double from last year.

"After achieving a 100 per cent increase last year over the previous year, our procurement from the mainland is expected to double again this year (despite a larger base) by value," Chris Huber, a director of Target Sourcing Services, the sourcing arm of Minneapolis-based Target Corp, told China Daily yesterday.

"A 50-to-75-per-cent year-on-year growth can be expected in 2004," he added, noting China is a key sourcing market for the company's US outlets.

http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/en/doc/2003-11/11/content_280507.htm

(Granted, this story is five years old. Perhaps someone could advise if Target's sourcing from China is still as significant.)

China owns a big chunk of our national debt, to the tune of around $900 billion in U.S. treasury bonds. If they dumped them, we'd be in a world of shit. In the last ten years, we've exported the last remnants of our manufacturing capacity to China (literally, in some cases). As far as they're concerned, we're just a big, open market on which to dump cheap crap made out of toxic waste. The U.S. government encourages this because a few retailers and the credit card companies make big profits. The downside is that there are no manufacturing jobs anymore, so people without college degrees have to work at WalMart. Also, the poor and middle class are in debt up to their eyebrows. the whole structure is a house of cards, as we're all beginning to realize. We're basically a Chinese economic colony, so we have to watch what we say about their human rights abuses. There's also the awkward business of Iraq, Gitmo and Abu Ghraib to think about. Hey Kettle—you're black!

14. I think what is truly remarkable, at least in my area, is that people
shop Wal-Mart thinking they're getting items cheaper than shopping in other places. I have been doing a LOT of comparison shopping. Just because Wal-Mart says their prices are the lowest does not mean that is true. One thing I know is that I can find better quality in other stores often for the same price or LESS. Just my personal experience.

18. You are right about that
I noticed, when I still set foot in a Wal-Mart occasionally, that not only are the prices not uniformly lower, they will actually gouge when they think they can.

17. It's *not* China per se - not the regular people
It's the Chinese companies that use sweatshop labor and put poisons in food and medicine to save a buck. But, especially, it's the American companies that enable them. It's the corporations, stupid! (Not calling anyone here stupid, just trying to get my meme taken up.... ;) )

19. "Remember when Wal-Mart was as American as apple pie"…
http://letters.wakeupwalmart.com/dia/organizationsCOM/wakeup/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=1914">Remember when Wal-Mart was as American as apple pie

In the 1980s, if you can believe it, Sam Walton and Wal-Mart not only used to have a “Buy America” program, but Wal-Mart made a public commitment to "buying everything possible from suppliers who manufacture their products in the United States."

http://www.wakeupwalmart.com/downloads/sam-imports.pdf">Read Sam Walton’s ‘Buy America’ letter.

In fact, Sam Walton understood that losing good-paying, middle class American manufacturing jobs, exploding trade deficits, and a dependence on foreign imports was bad for America, bad for hard working families, and in the end, bad for Wal-Mart.

But that was then... this is now.

Now, it’s safe to say, Wal-Mart likes to buy from anywhere but America.

And, Wal-Mart’s “Buy America program” has become a “Buy China” program that makes Wal-Mart and China stronger while weakening America.

And, if you don’t believe us, here are the facts:

* Wal-Mart imports $22 billion of Chinese goods, making Wal-Mart the #1 importer of Chinese goods

* Wal-Mart, if it were its own country, would be China’s sixth largest trading partner

* Wal-Mart ships American jobs overseas, both directly and by pressuring American suppliers to move offshore

* Wal-Mart lobbies for free-trade agreements that make it easier for companies to ship American jobs overseas

* Because of the growing trade deficit with China, the U.S. has lost an estimated 1.8 million jobs since 2000

20. I'm going to shop at WalMart today, do I get a "fuck you" too?
Why shouldn't I shop there when breakfast cereal is at least $1.00 cheaper there than at the Kroger grocery store down the street?
