The Rev. Steve Kern says his marriage to his wife of 38 years has been bolstered despite the couple's receiving phone calls throughout the night and having at least one gay activist show up Sunday at his small inner-city church to take notes of his sermon.

Sally Kern said Wednesday it's been stressful since her comments drew widespread criticism from local and national gay rights organizations, many of whom have called upon her to resign if she doesn't apologize for calling homosexuality, among other things, a threat to America. "At the same time I have felt the prayers of people, I have felt the peace of my Lord and I haven't missed a lick of sleep,” she said. Despite all the distractions, Steve Kern said he is "totally, completely in support of my wife.”

"It's just drawn us even closer together,” he said. "I get up every morning early and pray for her protection and everything. Of course, there's a great deal of concern about her protection. Some of the phone calls that we've gotten at home have been questionable.” Sally Kern said a state trooper stationed at the state Capitol has escorted her most days as she entered the building.

"I am getting lots of support and I certainly appreciate it,” she said. Sally Kern said the most critical comments are coming from out of state while most support is coming from Oklahoma, where about 76 percent of voters in 2004 passed a state constitutional amendment defining marriage as consisting only of the union of one man and one woman.
He said he wasn't alarmed when he recognized a member of the Oklahoma Stonewall Democrats, a gay rights group, at his church. He said he remembered him when his wife tried to get a bill passed two years ago that would have required libraries to move books with homosexual or explicit sexual material to adult-only sections. "I'm not saying anything that I have to apologize for or be afraid to say because we don't hate homosexuals, we want to help them,” he said. "We want them to find the forgiveness of God just like everybody else. We're not here to condemn them.”
