2 fired over Obama passport file breach
Third employee at State disciplined over accessing candidate’s records

Two contract employees of the State Department were fired and a third person was disciplined for accessing passport records of Sen. Barack Obama "without a need to do so," State Department officials confirmed to NBC News.

McCormack said the department itself detected the breaches, which occurred separately on Jan. 9, Feb. 21 and March 14.

The three people who had access to Obama's passport records were contract employees of the department's Bureau of Consular Affairs, NBC News reported.

A senior official told NBC News there was "no political motivation" to the incidents, adding that the three were low-level contract employees doing administrative work and accessed Obama's records out of "curiosity."

O Kaaaay...

Via Keith Olbermann on MSNBC: Spokesman for State Department - "just low-level employees" and there was "no political motivation;" "contract employees."

Watergate Break-In

On June 17, 1972, Frank Wills, a security guard at the Watergate Complex, noticed tape covering the locks on several doors in the complex. He called the police and within minutes, five men were arrested inside the Democratic National Committee's (DNC) office. The five men were Virgilio González, Bernard Barker, James W. McCord, Jr., Eugenio Martínez and Frank Sturgis. The five were charged with attempted burglary and attempted interception of telephone and other communications. On September 15, a grand jury indicted them and two other men for conspiracy, burglary and violation of federal wiretapping laws. The two others were E. Howard Hunt, Jr. and Gordon Liddy

All seven men were either directly or indirectly employees of President Nixon's Campaign to Re-elect the President, CREEP.
.

Guess who else worked at the college level for the Nixon campaign in 1972? Can you say Rovian?:

http://liberalvaluesblog.com/?p=1303

Video at the site shows Dan Rather interviewing college-age Karl Rove in 1972 at CREEP working for Nixon.

Obama campaign spokesman: "We demand to know ... why it took so long to reveal this security breach."

State Department Inspector General Accused Of Multiple Cover-Ups:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x3039672

Dan Abrams reporting Inspector General who would have investigated this only found out about this breach TODAY. Eric Holder with Obama campaign: "That to me is mind-boggling." Abrams: "This is important." The (State Department) is confirming that they knew this for month, but it never made it's way up the chain... Failure to report up (supposedly) THREE INCIDENTS. Joe DiGenova, former independent counsel, says this implies there was a conscious effort to cover up.

3. Everything old is new again.
My question is, WHY NOW? They knew in January. Now, Obama is dealing with Wright fallout. There's a whole thread of supporters rejoicing because this knocks Wright out of the news. This focuses sympathy toward Obama.

Why would the State Department want sympathy for Obama?

They probably weren't even documented...except that this happened THREE SEPERATE TIMES! So "mere nosiness," as Keith Olbermann put it, has to be ruled out.

Edited on Thu Mar-20-08 07:59 PM by rocknation
I've worked with contractors who've ranked just below VP of a company. These weren't mere data entry clerks. THREE different breaches by three different people suggests that there's a mission to get to that information. Is there something in this file that the Rethugs want to unearth?

14. Kate O'Beirne's husband screened applicants for jobs with the CPA in Iraq. ... LOOK!

Ties to GOP Trumped Know-How Among Staff Sent to Rebuild Iraq
Early U.S. Missteps in the Green Zone

Adapted from "Imperial Life in the Emerald City," by Rajiv Chandrasekaran, copyright Knopf 2006

After the fall of Saddam Hussein's government in April 2003, the opportunity to participate in the U.S.-led effort to reconstruct Iraq attracted all manner of Americans -- restless professionals, Arabic-speaking academics, development specialists and war-zone adventurers. But before they could go to Baghdad, they had to get past Jim O'Beirne's office in the Pentagon.

To pass muster with O'Beirne, a political appointee who screens prospective political appointees for Defense Department posts, applicants didn't need to be experts in the Middle East or in post-conflict reconstruction. What seemed most important was loyalty to the Bush administration.

O'Beirne's staff posed blunt questions to some candidates about domestic politics: Did you vote for George W. Bush in 2000? Do you support the way the president is fighting the war on terror? Two people who sought jobs with the U.S. occupation authority said they were even asked their views on Roe v. Wade .

Many of those chosen by O'Beirne's office to work for the Coalition Provisional Authority, which ran Iraq's government from April 2003 to June 2004, lacked vital skills and experience. A 24-year-old who had never worked in finance -- but had applied for a White House job -- was sent to reopen Baghdad's stock exchange. The daughter of a prominent neoconservative commentator and a recent graduate from an evangelical university for home-schooled children were tapped to manage Iraq's $13 billion budget, even though they didn't have a background in accounting.

24. DiGenova's Out Spinning Alreadly?
Guess you gotta admit, he know a bit about Passport-Gate cover-ups:
In retrospect, the so-called Passport-gate affair and the Plame-gate investigation have many parallels, both involving White House abuse of its access to government secrets and calculated leaks to the press to undermine a political adversary. But the two prosecutors – diGenova and Fitzgerald – approached their duties very differently, with diGenova seemingly determined not to find wrongdoing in contrast to Fitzgerald's dogged strategy to get to the bottom of the mystery.

He's probably angling to get his old job back.
