Two men and their speeches.

Sometimes it takes a day or two after a speech has been given to reflect on its meaning and the impact in might have on the future. That is certainly the case with Barack Obama's treatise on race relations in America in his Monday "A More Perfect Union" speech. Which contrasted nicely with Bush's speech yesterday on the fifth anniversary of his shock and awe bombing of an innocent nation that never struck America, which kicked off his illegal, preemptive war.

The official title of Chucklenutz' speech was "Reflections on the Global War on Terror." Sound so romantic, so poetic, so Walden Pond." Gimme a break. A better title would be the "100 Year Oil War," or "Cheney's Abu Graib Adventure" or "How to Kill a Million Innocent Civilians and Bankrupt America Without Really Trying" has a nice ring to it. "Gulf War, Part Duh . . . " is kinda clever, but it minimizes the carnage and great losses on each side.

Whatever moniker you wanna give it, John Seery writing for the Huffington Post an offered this commentary following the big anniversary party that Bush threw in his head yesterday: "President Bush has told us time and again -- and again at the time of proposing the surge -- that we are fighting terrorists "over there" in Iraq so that we don't have to fight them "over here" in the United States. But one of the first things we did in the surge was to seal the borders in Iraq, to prevent foreign insurgents from entering. We tried to keep Al-Qaeda terrorists out of Iraq. Wasn't that new-found goal of stabilizing the country (for political reconciliation) fundamentally at odds with our greater global strategy of confronting, engaging, and fighting terrorism in Iraq rather than elsewhere? Why are we now trying to keep them out of Iraq -- displacing the violence -- so that they are free to fight us closer to home? Can this glaring military contradiction, a flip-flop in strategy from confrontation back to cold war containment, simply be elided, spun, and finessed? My own gut feeling is that the neo-cons and hard-core Bushies just don't care. They are clinging to the pretense of eventual success in Iraq surely in order to save face (and/or oil). They want to construe the repression of violence in Iraq as achieving a "victory" over terrorism. But it's not.

It's no mere coincidence that the Giggling Killer's approval rating hit an all-time low after his "Get Our Oil Outta Iraq" speech on Wednesday. The poll by CNN and the Opinion Research Corporation found that 67 percent of 1,019 adults surveyed from March 14 to 16 disapproved of the Bush administration. CNN reports that "the 31 percent approval rating in the latest survey was a new low for Bush in its polling records, 40 percentage points lower than at the start of the Iraq war on March 20, 2003." In the never-ending personal competition against his Pappy, Dim Son is still winning. George H. W. Bush's approval rating bottomed out at 29 percent in July 1992. Give Georgie Jr. a cookie, he's still topping his poppy - in poll numbers and number of dead bodies stacked allllll the way up to Jesus.

As for that other speech, the eloquent dissertation on race in America . . .. well, the TV pundits just don't get it. As Obama said in that very speech, they're more interested in endless replays of Rev. Wright's inflammatory comments that any real discussion of racial tensions in America. Or how those tensions are fomented by Big Corporations to distract us for the underlying economic troubles that plague both blacks and whites. As usual, the significant points of the speech are overshadowed by the sensational headlines and images.

Dan Baltz writing for the Washington Post made this point: "In so many ways, Obama's speech was remarkable: ambitious, lofty, gritty, honest and unnerving. In tone and substance, and in the challenge he laid down to the country about the need to somehow move beyond the racial stalemate, it was the kind of speech Americans should expect of a presidential candidate or a president. The question is which will last longer -- Obama's eloquent words about racial divisions and reconciliation or questions about his relationship with a man whose words have shocked the country. . . . The danger is that what might last are the images of his Chicago pastor -- edited and reedited into television ads, YouTube videos and an endless stream of e-mails delivered quietly into the computers of millions of Americans. That would be good neither for Obama nor for the goals he talked about on Tuesday."
