Tibet no reason for Bush to miss Olympics: White House

The unrest in Tibet will not dissuade President George W. Bush from attending the Olympics Games in China, the White House said Thursday.

"The president's position about the Olympics has been that this is not a political event but a chance for athletes to compete at the top of their class," said White House spokeswoman Dana Perino, asked whether Bush should rethink his plans to go to the Bejing Olympics.

"The president's position is that this should be about the athletes and not necessarily about politics," she added.

Earlier Bush "told the Chinese that this is going to shine a spotlight on all things Chinese," Perino said.
