Woman Slain While Calling 911 For Home Break-In
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080321/ap_on_re_us/911_killing

WEST COVINA, Calif. - A woman made a 911 call from her suburban mansion to report an attempted break-in, but her pleas were interrupted by gunshots, then silence: She had been shot to death.

The woman told the dispatcher late Wednesday morning that someone was trying to break into her home in upscale West Covina, Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Dan Rosenberg said.

"Deputies heard gunshots followed by silence and an open phone line," he said.

3. When economic times get rough, there will be more murders and suicides and other acts of desperation
Not an excuse, but it's Psycho 101.

10. I've noticed an uptick in crime of all types in DC...
always precedes any government acknowledgment of a worsening economy. The poor are always the first to be affected.

4. OMG
That poor woman, what a ghastly way to die.

I notice they make much of her living in "upscale West Covina" in a "suburban mansion". Does anyone know, are home invaders and robbers more likely to target such places as the economy worsen, or is it just the impression I get from the news? As in they tend to report these crimes against the wealthy more than similar crimes against the rest of us?

Either way, I'm glad I don't live the McMansion life. The more you've got, the more you've got to protect.

7. For some reason, this brought to my mind
those horrible murders in the Lane Bryant store in suburban Chicago. One of the women called 911. I think this enraged the would-be robber, and he killed the women in the store. (One survived). I could be wrong about this theory, but it has crossed my mind.

That poor woman.

11. The Lane Bryant murders were horrific. I don't shop now without thinking about that.
If that could happen at a strip mall, then it could happen at any mall any where. It's frightening and tragic.

9. This is why you grab the shotgun first,
and the telephone second.
