Okay, Gore is getting alot of headlines these days. A majority of Americans seem to like him and applaude his efforts on the environment. Barack Obama is looked at as a rock star. I think people look at him and see hope. He is, like Bill Clinton, the American success story.

My Question, who does the righ have to inspire and move people like these two? Will George Bush get the attention and respect Bill Clinton has? People LOVE Bill Clinton. Why? Because we were proud when he was in office and he didn;t piss off the world. This is my theory on why the righ has been attacking Obama and Gore so much lately. They are worried and they know they can't coach or find a Republican that match these two.

2. Rudy, the "9/11 Mayor".
The right wing is gushing over him. They don't care about his social views. They are blindly partisan hacks who want a Repug in power.

3. I don't know who the 2008 running mate will be
I honestly can not see Rudy being 'their guy'. John McCaine is a long shot in my opinion as well. Who else can run who isn't damaged goods?

Only a few will stay home in protest if their right wing kook doesn't get the nomination.
The fundies will vote for "gay-rights Rudy" because he's a Republican who talks tough against Arabs and other "less than desirables".

"Although both he and his wife, Patricia, describe themselves as religious conservatives who are in “a different place” to Mr Giuliani on social issues, being “America’s Mayor” on September 11, 2001, trumps everything.

Mary Gail Swenson, 63, could scarcely take her hands off him as she posed for pictures with Mr Giuliani and whispered in his ear. What did she say? “I wanted to thank him for being so strong in the face of fear. When 9/11 happened he made us feel safer."

See, these conservatives don't care about his social views. They love that he is a tough talking chickenhawk Republican.

Many DUer's are foolish to think that Rudy is not formidable."

recent Quinnipiac Poll, he out-polled Hillary, Obama, and Edwards handily (well outside MOE). Rudy is a very serious candidate, because he's at least a threat to take NY away from Hillary. He may not be the Red State Right's perfect candidate, but they'll come out to vote against Hillary in droves. We're talking about people who use the word "Hillary," as a substitute for "Hell." As in, "What the Hillary do you think you're doing."

As far as other Repubs that might run, that aren't damaged goods, I'll offer up the name of Chuck Hagel. I think he's seriously considering a run, and will probably announce at some point. He's probably the (potential) candidate I fear the most. His foreign policy positions are, for political purposes, the same as Wes Clark's. The difference between the two, of course, is that Clark is a Liberal and Hagel is very much a Conservative. Hagel votes with Bush on everything except FP. Although he did vote for IWR, that's not going to hurt him with people who are likely to vote for him---that's an issue that only matters to a small contingent of politically active Dems.

Rudy has a certain appeal to those who are drawn to authoritarian figures, but I suspect that Hagel would beat him because of Rudy's "baggage." I think Hagel has more intrinsic appeal to "heartland" type voters. OTOH, he'll lose some ground with some Repubs because he's so outspoken against the President's Middle East policies. Between the two, Rudy's gonna get the AIPAC money. In any case, I think he'd definitely shake things up a bit.

Rudy = authoritarian, neoconservative.
Hagel = heartland conservative, and realist anti-neocon.

Stick a fork in McCain.

6. Agree completely.
And, as a blue voter who dwells in a red state - there's not as many fundie nuts as you think. There are border-line fundie nuts in these purple/red states who LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Rudy and the moderates love him, too.

He'd kick HRC's butt all over the purple states. We have to put up someone against him to make these folks THINK before yanking the lever.

7. It is still very early in the game.
McCain will have his neo con friends smear Rudy. Still, these numbers are not that bad. But we should take every Repug who is running seriously. We cannot assume that they will "get their ass kicked" just because the GOP is not popular right now.

9. Agreed. Still very early.
You're right, Rudy has not been tested (i.e. smeared). I'm sure that he'll have some points knocked off his polling when some of his "baggage" gets a thorough airing out. Also agree that it's a bad idea to think Repubs will get their ass kicked. Presidential politics are a different kind of deal. I'm hopeful that voters do not want to see the return of Republican domination any time soon, and that we can continue to pick up Congressional seats in the next election, but I don't think that means a Repub candidate for President can't win.

11. A Repub can sneak through by a few points and..
we could still keep our majorities and gain some seats, in the Senate more so than the house. But you never know. What I do know is that the GOP/Evangelicals will flock around the Republican candidate so be it Judas.
