There seems to be a number of such names on DU and after reading this thread and many similar ones before it, it made me wonder if there was any issue here.

Edit: I'm perfectly fine with it.

1. I have no problem if it's how those folks choose to refer to themselves
I don't find it universally offensive if I'm referred to as a chick or a girl; depends on the context, I guess, and who's saying it. If it's obviously said in a derisive manner, I don't appreciate it, but I've not had that happen in decades, I don't think...

2. People can define themselves however they like.
That's a separate issue than referring to an adult woman as "a plucky young girl."

3. What do you care for how people refer to themselves?
It's their handles and they can call themselves what they wish.

4. Lots of Chips, Lots of Shoulders
When there are a few people in one place, someone is bound to take offense.

5. i don't care what people call themselves as a rule
obviously there's a limit and i can see why some people might be annoyed, DU would close an account if a person's user name had certain derogatory words for certain racial groups in the handle, and i assume they would close an account if the person's user name included '88' (code for heil hitler) while i see that kind of code used freely and openly on other sites (say the poker sites)

i just don't think "girl" or "chick" is an equivalent slur, these words can and ARE used to insult and minimize women, but they also can and ARE used in an affectionate manner

sort of like, you can call someone "honey" and it's because they're your best friend, or it's because they're a moron -- it doesn't make the word "honey" verboten

7. People can call themselves whatever they want to, IMO
and some of us old buffaloes can't seem to let go of our teens. It's what keeps plastic surgeons in Lexuses.

In other words, it's not MY problem...

8. AS long as the names are self-applied, it's fine.. . . . . . n/t

9. Is there something wrong with bein a girl or a chick?
I'm a man. I had nothing to do with that fact so I have no sense of accomplishment in it. What I can do is try to be the best husband father grandfather friend etc. to the people around me. To the extent I've accomplished those things I'm proud. Where I have failed I'm regretful.

If anyone is bothered by a DU'er identifying themselves as a chick or a girl (even if they aren't) they really need to get out more.
